What does NAT Type mean?

Hey boys and girls. I am a video game idiot but I do enjoy playing. Notice on the bottom of the xbox live screen something that says: NAT Type: Moderate.....what does this mean? Is it adjustable or should I just ignore it. Thanks all

Generally that error is in regards to NAT type, what does your NAT type show up as under network settings?

My NAT type is not working, I just got a new modem from Comcast, and now the NAT type is unavailable. Any suggestions?

 

NAT is Network Address Translation. It allows your network to communicate with devices that are hooked up to your router or modem. The best type of NAT is open. If your NAT is moderate then only some communication is being received. If you go to network
in the settings of your Xbox One you can click on advanced settings on the bottom of the screen, then select the third option which I believe is clear MAC address. After you select this option your console will restart. Once it restarts go into network settings
again to see if your NAT changed to open.

 

Tried it a few times but after the system re-started etc it still goes back to moderate. Should I worry about this? Ignore it?

 

Moderate connection you will be fine trust me....got mine to say open recently as long as it doesnt say strict you should be good.

 

Thanks guys. Took a few re-starts but it did change from moderate to open. (that was after I obviously hit the wrong button and I realized it was asking me the name of the new wirelesss network ((which I know ZERO about)

Keep it moderate. Open allows a bit more ease-of-access for some things, but really can cause issues if someone manages to get into your network.

Moderate you should be fine but open is always better. If you really wanted to change it you would have to go into your router's settings and enable UPnP and uncheck NAT.

 

Here is an article that does a good job of explaining the drawbacks of a "Moderate" or "Closed" NAT. An "Open" NAT will provide the best experience on the LIVE service.

 

OP good topic, I also have some questions. When I do network test on my Xbox One my DL speed is 13 mbps. But when I test my PS4 my DL speed is only 5 mbps. My Xbox NAT is open and my PS4 says NAT type 2. Whats the diference? Is my PS4 slower because PSN
sucks or what? I use wired connection on both consoles.

 

Have you tested the connection speed with both plugged or just one at a time? Also, with open enabled more data is allowed through without being filtered. There is a chance the system on PSN is overburdened but unlikely.

 

They both plugged in and actually my ps4 speed is all over the place allways and my xb1 speed is usually stable .

 

No idea then. If it were a stable speed with both I would just say it is the security type. But if one is unstable it may be a networking issue. Hard to say without specifics.
