What does an xbox live account allow me to do?

Hello,

I am interested in getting an xbox live account but I'm a bit confused as to what i can do with it. I know I can use it to play online with other players on a different console to me. But will it also allow me to play online with a friend using the same
console as me?

Xbox live profile issue

My xbox live profile does not allow me to play online, what can I do to fix this?

Xbox Live Usernames

We have had our Xbox Live account for a while now, and it's a paid account at that, but my husband's nephew recently created a free Xbox Live account and told us that where the free accounts are concerned, you're no longer allowed to pick your own username. Now, allegedly one is assigned to you and you cannot change it unless you pay to change it. Does anyone else know if this is true?

Having a xbox live account will enable you to play with players all over the world but before you can do that you have a xbox live Gold subscription and this allows you to have up to 4 free games each month. 2 on the xbox 360 after two for the xbox one!

If your friend has a Gold membership and the game offers split screen co-op then you can also play online with them on the same console, although sometimes you can drag a Guest account on with you but they will not be able to communicate online

Another quick question.....If I have an additional "adult account" on my Xbox (not a child's account) , one for my wife and older son, do I have to pay for a separate Live account? or does the one Xbox Live account allow me to add everyone in my family and
for them all to have the separate ability to play Xbox Live with no extra charge? and have separate achievements ...etc.
