I have probably played Rez HD more than the rest of the list combined, if you have not played it I highly recommend it, it's an XBLA game for those that don't know about it, the last level in the game almost made me cry with joy every single time I played it,
and since moving to PS3 it is the only game I have missed...

The very top games for me:

Fallout 3 and New Vegas

Red Dead Redemption (except the part where you have to lasso and break 3 horses. That was ridiculous and I almost rage quit)

The Mass Effect Series

Crackdown 1 and 2

Rainbow 6 Vegas 1 and 2

Gears of War 1 and 3. I barely remember 2.

 

Oh man, I have so many favorites but I highly doubt some of them would be considered the best.

Halo 3 will hold a special place as it was my first game to play over LIVE.

Xbox Live Favorites
- More for competitive multiplayer

Street Fighter IV/Super Street Fighter IV - Best online experience for me, fantastically fun fighting game with a large community even including people frequently playing in lower to intermediate skill levels 5 years after release. I still find
random times that I get back into this game after lapses of play.

Halo 3/4 - Favorite shooter experience. Did not care for ODST/Reach. Probably the longest sustained attention of a shooter series I played on 360, though I haven't played these much lately due to time restrictions.

Single-Player/Co-Op Favorites



Mass Effect Series - I loved the story, gameplay, and characters, but preferred 1 the most in hindsight. It had the most potential though needing tweaks and improvements. Instead, it got pushed in a completely different direction
for 2 and 3, though those games are still good; they essentially dropped a lot of the core elements that made it unique and diluted it into the pool of pop-shooters. I did enjoy ME3 multiplayer, though intermittently and ultimately it felt more like I was
grinding than playing, so those days are essentially over.

Fallout 3/NV - Great environment and gameplay, every playthrough seems to go differently and lead me into new encounters. I definitely liked NV better, in large part due to weapon variety/customization and faction relations emphasis over karma.

Halo Wars - Though I found it very shallow for an RTS and as such had very transient interest in the multiplayer, the environment and many of the missions were solid and it is fun to revisit for the campaign and SP skirmishes when I am in the mood
to play something slow-paced.

Soul Calibur IV - The single player content was massive and also fun, as was unique aspects of this such as customizing characters to have special attributes to help you overcome challenges. Unlocking items and customizing characters, etc. put
an interesting twist on the typically-monotonous fighting game single-player format. It was very intriguing and although the multiplayer didn't really make my "top" list, the SP did (though not with SC V, that game was ultimately disappointing).

Batman: Arkham City - Much better than its predecessor and ultimately an awesome single-player sandbox action/adventure beat'em-up game. Probably my favorite overall action/adventure title. Plus, I am a fairly big Batman fan.

Borderlands in theory would have been a on the list but I found myself always just soloing and then getting bored. If you don't have friends to play with, I found you seem to have to deal with frequent people that are trying to do their own thing, trying
to fast-travel you out of the area to go do their quest even though you are hosting, AFK in town with a menu up, grabbing any and all loot even if its better suited for you, and coming in partied with someone way over your level. If you play with friends
they tend to listen a little more to "hang on a second," "let's go," or share loot with you that they think would benefit you. I am not saying randoms don't do it, but it turned into Diablo 2 for me again... playing solo to not risk it. It is a great game
though.

...most other titles I played ended up being little more than temporary phases where I got bored and moved on shortly after the novelty wore off.
