What are the best ways to Counter and Escape the Storm in Fortnite?

You need to be more aware of the map

I keep falling to my death building stairs running away from the storm any ideas on how to survive the storm until being the final person?

Can I survive building stuff within the storm?

Run away and hide in a bush thats what i do

I think the beast way to survive in the Fortinite Storm is go to the save place and in the way take suplies, so than you try make some construction in save local to be some bait and then you hide in some place until the other gui go to bait and think in
be a save place then you go and kill the enemy.Try make this and see if you can win

@ , personally i belive that you should build a maximum of 3 stairs every time you are running like you would see Tfue or other streamers, also a good way is to stay one step ahead of the storm and land at places in the middle of the
map , such as dusty depot, salty springs, retail row, plesent part , i wouldnt advise going to the edge of the map

I have seen some people build stairs and then floors to run on afterwards no idea how they can build this way without falling in the process of building it?

Start running earlier , give yourself time and try to predict where the center is going to be and build / fortify. Easier said than done but its worth a shot.
