Want to change gamertag for the first time. Still wants to charge me for it.

I have never changed my GT ever since I registered my account and chose to go with whatever Microsoft gave me back then. I'd like to change it now. However, when I try to proceed with the change, it prompts me that I'll be charged the usual amount. Isn't
one-time GT change free? Can someone from support help investigate what is going on?

Is the first gamertag change really free?

The xbox support page about changing gamertags says:

"Follow these steps to change your gamertag. Note that the first time you change your gamertag, there’s no charge. However, there will be a small charge for all subsequent changes."

I followed the steps and I have never changed my gamertag before but it is still trying to charge me $9.99?

The support site for changing Gamertag says that the first change of the Gamertag is free. However my Xbox One still wants to charge me with 9,99€ instead of free. Is there a Problem with my Microsoft Account?

You'te only allowed a free change if you were given a randomly generated tag when you created your account. Yours is not a randomly generated tag so you would have to pay. Random tags are 2 words followed by a series of numbers, such as AngryJoey7364738

 

I am not sure how true that is. I was told that a gamertag change is allowed for free, once in the lifetime for as long as one doesn't change the default GT you get when signing up. If Microsoft chose to not generate my default GT using whatever naming convention
you have mentioned, I don't see how that is my problem or what I could have done at the time of signing up to enforce that. I hope what you've said is not truly the case.

And yes switches is right you only get the name change free once and only if you got a system generated namr

The free name change was only given to people who didn't get a system default one

Before the free name change was issued you could pick

The people.who did it recently never had a choice that's why they were given one free change

You will have to pay for your change it is that simple

 

You keep missing my point. What I'm trying go get at is that I never "chose" my GT. It was already "chosen" for me when I signed up. And I'm old enough to have a couple of kids of my own. YouTube is for my kids, I use my brain instead.

If you were suggested a name because the previous one wasn't available that's still your choosing

You chose that name out of 5 that were suggested

It's stilling a system generated nameless usually something close to your real.name or your choice

When the free anemone change came in 3 years ago it was when we first had system generated names and yes it was a emotion and fluffy animal and a number that's how we can tell if it's generated or not

Yours at worst case is a suggested not a generated name

My gamer tag is nowhere near my real name. Not even one word. How's that a choice when I didn't get to use a name I actually wanted? That makes no sense.

Remember there is not every name is available your first choice is rarely available I was lucky with mine

System generated names are given you don't choose that's the point you aren't gettimg

There isn't a checklist of you entering a name. You sign up and asked for email and password and age

The system downloads your name to your console no choice about it

Completely different then 5-15 names you are shown close to your name

 

As mentioned before your name doesn't fit the criteria of the system names
