I see we are looking this from different angles. I'm not seeing console vs PC here. I'm looking at upgraded hardware.

Microsoft have already told us that the One will play all the same games as the Scorpio will, so what is the point in getting the latter other than the upgraded hardware for some extra shiny and frames per second?

That's not PC talk. That's hardware talk.

The console itself wasn't modded, everything was done via external means. Nothing about the operation of the console itself was changed.

I take it the XIM was what breaks the code of conduct?

  2. Isn't the clever part of console that devs run the same hardware as you do - and optimizing and bugfixing is easier?

Look aat how many updates there has been on Dirt Rally for PC compared to X1?

This is why we buy consoles.

I assume that devs for Playstation Pro will get lazy at some point, and not optimize for those with ordinary PS4.

Same game is to sense you run Pro - you don't need to buy two games.

At E3 Scorpio probably reveal more how it's going to work for Xbox.

I fear you need to download a complete different version for Scorpio and that is the end of the line for me.

  3. Kind of.

The different hardware in a PC is a little overstated in this argument. The reason for this is DirectX and OpenGL/Vulkan. These are layers that sit between the game and the hardware and translate the instructions from one to the other.

Of course that doesn't mean hardware is unimportant. Take for example the first Mass Effect game. Newer AMD processors don't support the 3DNow instruction set and so at certain points all the characters will turn into a blob of black pixels. In essence the
layers can't translate to a language that isn't there.

In short unless you are running 6 years or older hardware, DirectX and it's brothers will take care of the rest.

The thing here is that Microsoft charge publishers to release a patch for the Xbox One and must go through an approval process. There is no fee for patches on Windows or approval system.

So patches on the PC can get released as soon as they are ready, while on the console they will wait and bundle fixes together in order to reduce the fees and the wait from the approval process.

This is double edged sword. On one hand the PC version will get fixes generally quicker. On the other, the console version is less likely to encounter issues.

There is very little reason either console would need to release two different versions.

Simply have the game automatically detect the system it is running on and adjust the game to suit.

Not interested in specs & all that guff.

Shinny graphics etc do not make a game good.To many times has a game looked great but been rubbish.

Recently hooked up my old crystal xbox to play KOTOR,looks dated but still beats the pants of any game that's about now with all their shiny graphics.

If the Scorpio plays the same games as the xbox one then i'll stick to my xbox one & buy the Scorpio sometime in the future if I want.

That & the fact of Microsofts track record with console reliability on release i'll wait.

As for upgradable consoles,no thanks,if I want that then i'll get a pc.

  5. Interesting read, thank you.

I hope for this too - same game sense platform and adjust.

But a game cannot look ahead in time!!!

How will MS do X1 BC onto Scorpio?

I really hope they do patches that you download at most, and not the 360 BC thingy which demand to download the full game - even if you have it on disc.

360 games are tiny in size compared to X1, and doable.

I hope for a bit like PC, compatibility setting but same code can run as it is.

If Scorpio really get the specs to do 4K gaming, it could without a flaw emulate X1 even without game being laggy response.

  6. "I don't care about specs. It's gameplay that matters."

This isn't a statement I can't completely disagree with. After all, all the good looking graphics in the world can't save a bad game.

Yet specs do matter. How many of the games just in 2016 alone would not have been possible if people hadn't been pushing the specs, hadn't expected more from the hardware in the machines they were buying.

I'll just pick on Mario, as if there is a gaming icon, he is it. The games on the NES remain great fun to this day but would you really be content to be sticking with those mechanics and graphical quality over all these years? Would you be happy to stick to
Super Mario quality and never gotten Super Mario World, and that's just one generation apart.

When people say they don't care about specs, well I'm sorry I don't believe them. If they didn't care they wouldn't be entertaining the thought of buying the Xbox Scorpio, wouldn't be awed by what the latest games can do on the updated hardware.

If people didn't care about specs they wouldn't have an Xbox One. They'd have a $100 potato PC that could play all the latest games at the lowest graphical settings.

Just going to the display. Would you trade in your flat screen LED/Plasma TV for a CRT while gaming?

Specs matter and you're lying to yourself if you say they don't.

Of course I like things that look better etc etc. I just don't care about how it's done or what's in the machine that does it.

Obviously specs matter when it comes to making things bigger & more shiny. They just don't always make things better.

I always wait a while before I buy anything new on the market, the only reason I got a xbox one at launch was because I got it for free.

I'm not buying a Scorpio, not until my xbox one gives up the ghost anyway & even then it would depend on a few things.

Mario was a bad choice as far as i'm concerned, can't stand the Mario games lol

Saying I don't care about specs was probably a poor choice of words, should of said they are not the most important thing to me when it comes to gaming.

    Want an Upgradeable Xbox 1?

Regarding your first comment about games released in 2016 on superior hardware: For Xbox fans in particular, you could cite a case like ReCore - a game I love to pieces and played until death - but looking at it from another perspective, it's not something
that couldn't have been accomplished on "lesser" hardware - namely, the previous console generation. And if you look at the trend of REMASTERING, wherein older games run a little faster and better on new hardware (eg, during the past year I've replayed Saints
Row IV, Sleeping Dogs, Dishonored, Skyrim and The BioShock Collection), it's moreover thanks to the underlying design and mechanics which separate good experiences from bad ones.

Specs are arguably less important to console owners (as Daft Badger pointed out) and if we wanted to make a case for upgrading our gear before Scorpio ships, then we'd likely be discussing the pros and cons of a PS4 Pro as opposed to some pie-in-the-sky PC benchmark.

Regarding the display comparison: As it happens, prior to booting my Xbox One for the first time, all previous consoles performed handsomely on my eight-year-old SONY Trinitron CRT monitor - which was only replaced by "superior" hardware when a freak lightning
storm damaged a good proportion of our house and contents. A more relevant comparison might exist between the caliber of a BRAND and its upper-tier product range, in which case my (Sony-branded) CRT never missed a trick.

Specs certainly matter if you're in the market for a new device. However, even if Scorpio shapes up at the MUST-HAVE console of 2017, it'll all be nought if it's not as aesthetically pleasing as my current Xbox One S (for example, I'm looking for a limited
edition or comparable white SKU) - leaving the tech specs as just another bulletpoint on the box. [Disclaimer: if a new game or IP ships concurrent with Scorpio and offers a compelling reason to upgrade, then all bets are off. In other words, CONSOLE specs
    - as opposed to PC specs - *do* matter if you want to be there on Day 1. ]

  9. In that we are very similar. My eyes start to fog over when people start to go on about cuda cores and teraflops. 'Is it better than what I have' is the question I'm happiest with.

Mario was picked simply because everyone knows Mario. Even people who have never played a videogame in their life know who Mario is.

I quite agree but many of those mechanics are only possible because hardware has advanced.

ReCore might well have been possible on the 360, but would have all the special effects, the size of the game. Hardware isn't just about the shiny and the frame rate, it makes the games we love possible.

Less important certainly but people wouldn't have upgraded and games would still be coming out on a far more regular basis on the 360 if specs weren't important.

Legend of Zelda is fun on the NES but you know what, I think I'd rather be playing Breath of the Wild.

As to getting the PS4 Pro. It's the same principle of why people keep buying Apple devices even though they are outstripped in most cases by other brands, people have bought into the ecosystem. Even things such as the achievement system and gamerscore are there
to make people feel invested and that they'd be losing out if they switched to another platform.

Well of course superior in the case of CRTs is somewhat subjective, after all they have better color accuracy than more modern types of display.

You know what though, still think I'm going to stick with my smartTV.

However once the systems are set-up, the PC takes the crown. It can do everything a console can do and adds in more, from the ability to tweak games to your liking to having more control options. To say that specs are for robots is ridiculous. It's people
pushing for better specs that have delivered the Xbox One and soon the Scorpio. People pushing for better specs are what has led to better gameplay experiences. Would you rather be playing The Oregon Trail as it was back in 1971 or would you rather be riding
across the plains in Red Dead: Redemption?
I think you missed the part where I said I don't EVER INTEND TO OWN A PC. Diff'rent strokes for different folks, and we've already been down this road before - by which I mean discussing my past CONSOLE history in this forum. Just a refresher: there was
actually a fork in the road, circa 1999, when I could've opted for the PC brigade (ie, when the internet was young), but I steadfastly stood by *ease of use* and decided on the Sega Dreamcast route. Arguably I took the wrong path, but looking back and looking
forward - to Scorpio - I'm still a technophobe; I still value ease of use over higher framerates or resolutions; I still prefer *plug & play* without needing a doctorate in rocket science.

The comment about specs being for "robots" was more of a cheap shot at smileskybird, and I unreservedly APOLOGIZE. 🙂 Would I rather be playing The Oregon Trail circa 1971 or riding across the plains in Red Dead Redemption? Er, neither. 1971 predates my
interest in CONSOLES and I absolutely detest every little piece of bloated and objectionable character drivel that has ever ushered forth from Rockstar. HORSES FOR COURSES, obvs.

    Define a better experience?

On the set-up side, the console obviously wins. As much as many PC gamers would like to claim that their system of choice is now plug and play, just like a console, there is simply more to do. Microsoft may have really narrowed that gap with Windows 10 but
    it is still there.

However once the systems are set-up, the PC takes the crown. It can do everything a console can do and adds in more, from the ability to tweak games to your liking to having more control options. You can treat a PC just like you would a console, or you can
do more, the options exist even if the one you chose is to have a PC that runs just like a console. You get the same gameplay experience if you want it.

To say that specs are for robots is ridiculous. It's people pushing for better specs that have delivered the Xbox One and soon the Scorpio. People pushing for better specs are what has led to better gameplay experiences. Would you rather be playing The Oregon
