    VRR or Dolby Vision?

Hello, how are you? My name is Mateus. I'm an Independent Advisor and I'll be glad to help you today.

First, welcome to the Xbox community. Regarding your question, we first need to understand what these two technologies are so that we can define which one will be most worthwhile for you.

VRR: The main task of VRR is to eliminate screen distortion during games. Tearing is a type of visual failure, where the image on your TV flickers in the middle of the frame before continuing as before. But what is really going on here?

Screen breakage occurs when the TV picture refresh is out of sync with the rate at which the console or PC graphics card delivers frames. You end up with an image on the screen that you see, for example, the top half of the screen displaying one frame and the bottom half the next.

That's because TVs don't update the entire screen image instantly. A monitor driver quickly scans the screen, usually from top to bottom, updating the state of each pixel. It happens too fast for our eyes and brains to notice until it causes visual aberration.

The rip becomes noticeable when, for example, you use a 60Hz TV and the game's frame rate fluctuates between 45fps and 60fps. It's particularly obvious in fast-moving games like first-person shooters. Quickly turn the game around and the difference in the information on the screen can be very different from one frame to another.

VRR eliminates this by synchronizing the screen refresh rate with console output. You can't rip anymore without affecting performance because the console or PC sets the pace, not the screen.

    Dolby Vision:

Dolby Vision is Dolby Laboratories' own standard for the HDR format — High Dynamic Range, or high dynamic range, responsible for improving the number of colors displayed. Debuting practically alongside the HDR10, Dolby Vision makes use of a 12-bit RGB color depth — 4,096 shades per color, for a total of 68 billion colors — bringing greater quality and fidelity to the image reproduced in this format.

Unlike the HDR10, which typically offers a brightness of 1,000 nits (“candela per square meter”, a luminance unit that indicates the luminous intensity produced by a surface), Dolby's technology guarantees up to 10,000 nits. In addition, for a device to be able to use the technology, it must go through a series of prerequisites and standards required by Dolby Labs, making devices that support the technology display similar images to each other — something that doesn't happen with only certified devices to HDR10 or even to HDR10+, which can count on several differences in the same image.

    - In my case, I prefer Dolby vision because it will make my games more beautiful.

Xbox X + Sony TV best visual settings

I recommend keeping all of those 3 options enabled. When supported, Dolby Vision will provide superior image quality, but regular HDR will still provide a better picture than SDR. VRR should also remain on, this will make your gameplay feel smoother in games that support 120Hz or unlocked framerates.

    Thanks,
    Kyle

Hello Jay, would be great if you test your console with a different TV when you’re able to do it.

Meanwhile, if your TV has the 120Hz, VRR, Dolby Vision or other similar features, try disabling each one on the Xbox and TV, then verify if the inconvenience persists.

Lastly, make sure your console and TV firmware are up-to-date.

LG C1 and series X clarity settings grayed out.

On the Xbox console go to general Tv & display options, video modes, turn off allow variable refresh rate. Press settings button on LG C1 remote go to game optimizer turn off. You can now access the clarity tab on picture settings and have AI functions. Enjoy streaming apps with Dolby vision & Dolby Atmos be immersed. When you want to play games Turn the VRR on and Game optimizer.
