  2. If you want voice commands for the One I think you'll need the Kinect. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it does do a little of the voice recognition work on it's own. I'm sure it would be possible for them to add support for voice commands without it from
the headset, but since there is no first party wireless headset means the controller is already in your hands. So I don't think there is a lot of demand especially since the console interface has been updated to work better with the Kinectless Xbox One setups
    using the controller only.

Short of it is unless you plan on playing games that use the motion tracking or want a camera for Skype or Twitch you really don't need it. I do like it though for automatically signing in, gesture support for the home screen, and voice for videos pause,
play, and volume control without the controller.

  3. THe Kinect might be a worthwhile device if it were 50$ or so,but for the asking price of admission it's very limited in functionality and VERY few games take advantage of it. As it stands now i think the best move Microsoft ever made with the X1 asides
from the DRM cancellation was to offer a kinectless bundle which ended up boosting sales massively. I think this Kinect much like the last one will end up in the land of Video Game hardware abandonment (it's already mostly there). You will get far more enjoyment
out of two more games for your X1 rather than being slightly lazy with voice commands.

  4. Voice commands with external mic?

With the recent updates for Xbox One, all of the most important features are now a few button presses away. So you could essentially live without the Kinect and save yourself a hundred dollars or two.

  5. Say rubbish all you want but ultimately it boils down to opinion and personal preference. But the last Kinect was a Flop and this one isn't looking to take the world by storm either. As far as functionality i mean let's go over that...

    1. Works with a small selection of sub par low rated games.

    2. A iffy quality camera/Mic for things like Skype and the like of which i'm sure everyone reading this likely has a massively superior setup on a PC or even a mobile device. My Samsung Note 3 alone has a higher resolution camera than the Kinect does and
takes MASSIVELY better recorded and live video.

    3. Microsofts lack of dedication to the device swearing they would not remove it as part of the console and quickly backtracked on that once they saw the public mostly didn't want it.

I mean really as it stands right NOW the thing is a glorified voice command remote and an iffy quality camera. If you know what you are getting into and still want one hey it's YOUR money and don't let anyone tell you differently. But as i have gone over
on my youtube channel in greater detail it's functionality right now for the added cost is poor.

Ultimately though even people who LOVE the kinect i'm sure would agree it's a good thing MIcrosoft offered a Kinectless bundle option or the X1 install base would likely be massively smaller than it is now which would be a loss for gamers across the board.

  6. On a side note i'd be fairly surprised if they didn't eventually patch in the ability to use voice commands for the lazy folk with just a standard mic. The PS4 is capable of this without a PS camera and thus i see no reason why MIcrosoft could not patch
it in for X1 at some point (Not that i'd use it i'd feel like an idiot around my wife screaming at a gaming console)

Correct the last Kinect was a flop as it only sold 24 million units with Kinect Adventures being the highest selling 360 game ever. Huge failure.

but does the note 3 see in the dark, Kinect has night vision also, besides it becomes more fluent when using gestures and voice rather that controller, I don't have to double tap the xbox button the press x to record that, I just say it and boom done, I
don't need to navigate a menu to start something. and coming in from work and saying "xbox on" and have the tv, youview and sound system turn on ready and waiting for me never ever gets old.

  10. @Genchy Apparently sarcasm is lost on you...that said if you feel the need to defend your extra 100$ for...virtually no gain to each their own. In addition the Kinect sold a ton of units sure..but Software makes the money not the hardware and in that respect
outside of a SINGLE game it was an utter failure (of which that game was a packin in several million sales) But really you are going to use Kinect adventures a game that averaged 3/5 and 6/10 scores to justify a kinect?....Bet you liked Star wars kinect also?
Or the plethora of other "great games" released for the kinect. In addition this generation the sales of the Kinectless Bundle have vastly surpassed that of the kinect included one (and the stand alone isn't selling for beans) again you sounds awfully desperate
to defend that extra 100$ you spent as an early adopter...but if you like it that much go enjoy it and stop feeling such a sense of corporate white knight syndrome.

@Farscape247 So...you just further proved my point you basically pay extra to be lazy...which if that's your bag it's your money bud! And my Note 3 has builtin LED lighting for recording which produces a better result.

Numerous videos/Blogs/news stories have been done on the subject showing how...iffy the kinect is and how little it does for the money. And as far as the #1 most important thing for a gaming console...you know games? It adds nothing to the gameplay (Unless
your a diehard fan of Kinect fitness? Hey i won't judge!..much) But for the typical gamer it really does nothing to justify it's purchase price. And given how Microsoft has been treating it lately i suspect support to all but die in 2015 outside of it's
current use as a Voice command remote. Not to mention giving in and designing the interface to be more controller only friendly soon giving in to the demise of the device.

Ultimately it all boils down to personal preference after all it's YOU spending your money. But if we are going to talk in facts? Sales speak volumes as does hardware support...nether of which are in the favor of Kinect 2.0 in any capacity.

Happy new year! Now on to catching up on some of my backlog iv'e been neglecting on the X1 something fierce.

  13. Voice commands with external mic?

No one could possibly say one way or the other till said VR headsets release. But given of what we know of the PS4 headset since the Microsoft one is still under wraps thus far and that they are comparing it to Occulus rift...thus far i am not impressed.

But still until we know Pricing,Support of games, release date etc etc...nobody could say for sure.

And by the time the things actually release and even IF they gain a following and most anaylists are predicting VR to endup a gimmick. Chances are the stand alone Kinect will drop to 100$ meaning you didn't lose out on any savings not buying the bundle
should you choose to buy one later on. As it stands though we are all judging Kinect on it's current merits and concrete info available to us be it positive or negative.

  15. Given that voice commands on other devices don't require a expensive or rather large peripheral, it isn't a surprise that people would expect to have them from using a microphone in their Xbox One headset.

If my phone can do voice commands without a Kinect-esque add-on, then I'm sure that the One could do it too.

The problem being of course that if they did that then the public has just one more reason not to want the device.

I have found that while the Kinect responds to my girlfriend's voice pretty much every time, it ignores me unless I put on a false accent.
