Virtual Routers, an Xbox One, DHCP Server Errors and my gosh this is difficult

I'm a University student currently. There is free WiFi all over the campus and in the student halls. Unfortunately it doesn't quite reach every room. I do have a wired connection via Ethernet on my laptop, and I've been attempting to set up a wireless hotspot
that my phone and Xboxs can connect to.

I'm not doing very well. When I try to connect on my X1 I get the error 'Cannot connect to DHCP server.' I have allowed other connections to connect through my wired connection but they just don't want to.

On my phone it either gets stuck retrieving the IP address or says it has connected but then won't load anything.

Do any network magicians have a solution for me? I'd be extremely grateful. I'd even get you a pre release copy of Halo MCC. If I had one. I don't have one.

Yes I would recommend you:-



A) Use DHCP reservation to reserve the same ip address for your Xbox each time on your router, then set your Xbox ip address to auto. Some routers don't support DHCP reservation though (see B)



or



B) Set a static ip address outside the range of your DHCP server range, if the DHCP server range uses up the whole subnet just make the range smaller on your router.

 

Cannot connect xbox to wifi hotspot on PC

Hi, I only have a wired internet connection and one Ethernet port to connect to the internet, so I use my laptop as a wifi hotspot through programs like connectify/virtual router to connect to the internet with my phone and other devices.

For some reason when I try to connect to this with my Xbox One, it says 'cannot connect to DHCP server' or something along the lines of that.

How can I solve this problem??

You may want to check these guides on your problem as they provide some step by step tutorials on how to set up a connection to xbl using your laptop.

Thanks, but neither of those solved my problem.

I am not able to plug the Ethernet cable into the Xbox.

 

Afaik this is also working with a wireless connection between the One and your laptop.

 

Other possibility would be to have a router connected to your wall outlet instead the laptop and then connect the laptop and the One to it.

 

That would work, but I'm trying to do this without spending any money

 

Then maybe talk to your IT desk and ask why they do not provide an ip address to your Xbox. May be possible they prevent the mac address from getting one.

Or go and clone the mac address of your laptop to the One and check if it gets provided an ip address this way.
