Very strange freezing issue...

Hello,

Recently my old xbox 360 suffered the 3 red rings so i bought a used xbox and thought all was well. I play Call of Duty Black Ops 2 with my son quite a bit(our fav). Unfortunately when you go to the multiplayer offline screen and try setting it up(w/2 players),
the xbox freezes and needs turned off. Does it every time at the same spot when setting up the offline game.

So, i traded the replacement xbox with another one(both are the model before slim line came out). It froze at the same spot with the second xbox.

I traded the game in for another with no scratches and it still continues to freeze at the same spot. So the only thing that hasn't been replaced is the hard drive.

I cleared the cache and tried all options i explored online and here on the support. Could the original xbox compromised my hard drive? I can't play the game without a hard drive and Microsoft is telling me it wouldn't be the hard drive since I have no issues
with no other games(tried 5 other games with no problems).

Please help me, I'm extremely frustrated and don't know what else i can try other than buying a new external hard drive, but I'm being told it shouldn't be the hard drive. I tried talking to Activision and they were no help, they told me to try another new
game. I appreciate any help in advance.

When you empty the Cache you also delete the updates for games. You have to redownload them each time.

When i first updated the dash it was set at ask for password,I changed it to remember the password.

I have not head of the update with each play.Have you submitted to support?

 

Sorry to hear it. If the console works normally to a point and then freezes up the issue is more than likely the hard drive. Try removing and playing the game without the hard drive in the console. If you have no issues then the drive is the problem and
you'll need to replace it.

 

Thanks for the suggestion. However, how can you play the game in offline multiplayer without a hard drive? I have tried doing so and it says it requires a profile to play the game. I have even tried installing the game onto the console but does not allow
gameplay due to no hard drive(no profiles detected). I am not having problems with any other point in the game and no problems with any other games, which is why I have been told numerous times it can't be the drive.

 

If you have a disc based version of the game then just download the profiles to your console (or move them to the internal drive if you have a 360 S). Then you just need to use the disc to play.

 

Ok, thanks, I'll try to move the only two profiles onto the console. I didn't know you could move profiles onto the console. Btw, I don't have the slim version, regular 360(model before the slim line). The game always works if only one profile is set up,
it's when a second person signs on, it freezes on the set up multiplayer screen. I've even tried deleting all other profiles but the main one I used and it didn't work.

 

I cannot move any profiles to the console nor see an option to do so, remember I have the model before the slim. So I tried to delete both profiles and started another two, still freezes at the same moment in COD2. Please help, I don't see how it can be
the hard drive when all other games work?

 

thanks for the info. I would still like you to try this without that drive in. do you have a USB drive you can plug in for the test? if so just plug it in and format it to the console (should be automatic) then download the accounts to it.

 

Thanks, just tried your suggestion with no luck. I moved my primary profile and son's profile to a USB stick drive, turned the Xbox off and played the game without the side hard drive. Unfortunately even though we were able to locate our profiles, start
the game and sign in, it froze as we tried to set up offline multiplayer. So this was with my previous game and a new copy I have plus two different xboxs that were fairly sold new. What are the odds of that? Thanks for the tips thus far.

sorry I thought I replied to this again. if the console still freezes without the hard drive the issue may be with the console itself. you may need to upgrade to at least the 360 S console as the older FAT's are obsolite.

 

onyxishere: you are providing questionable information. first you assume that he has internal storage by telling him to "move the profiles onto the console" despite the fact that only the latest models (Jasper motherboard) of the "FAT" consoles actually
have internal storage. then you conclude that all FATs are "obsolete" and is possibly the problem. i know many many people still using the original models of 360 with no problems. also there is not just one model of "slim" but two. the 360 S and the 360
E. any 360 game would still work fine on any model of 360, as long as there is no issue with that particular console.

ShownTurnip: if you have changed consoles, discs, and now even ruled out the hard drive using a USB drive, then most likely you got something that was faulty twice. either the new disc is still bad (most likely option in my opinion), or both consoles were
faulty in some way (unlikely but possible).

to rule out bad discs, i would try installing the disc to the hard drive. you can do this from the dashboard by pressing X on the game tile for Game Details, then choosing Install. if the game does not install to 100% then there is an issue reading from
it. if it does fail, try it again to determine whether it's a problem with the disc, or the dvd drive. if the disc has a damaged area, then the install will probably fail at the same percentage every time. if the install fails at varying percentages, then
it's likely to be an issue with the laser or other dvd drive component causing problems with reading discs.

i'm not very familiar with Black Ops 2. are you trying to play splitscreen with two players on one console, or are you trying to play with two separate consoles networked together using System Link? you said this was Offline Multiplayer or i would suggest
it could be an internet connection problem. do you have issues with any other games?

for now try the disc install, and let us know how that goes, as well as any other information to help us to continue troubleshooting your issue.

 

QuickMythril, you're right, got another new copy of the game and it works flawlessly now. The previous used copy and previous new game both froze at the same spot. I tried to install the game onto the Xbox hard drive and it uploaded fine but both games still
froze at the same point. This is on one console playing two profiles on split screen(offline).

Here's the kicker. I've never been on Xbox live before and have never hooked it up to be online. When I got home from getting the third (new) game, instead of just trying it, I hooked up the Xbox to the Internet. It prompted me to update my Xbox and after
that I exited out. I don't have any subscription. Now the game works flawlessly with no problems after the past two days. So I can't say if it was the disc or the online updates but I'm going to have to say it was two bad disc games.

very glad you were able to resolve the issue. it could have been a problem with the game disc, or something that was resolved with a Title Update. you don't need a paid subscription to download System Updates or Title Updates. hopefully you won't run
into anything like this again, but going online to check for Title Updates is always a good idea when encountering game problems.
