Utterly broken update mechanics

Today when I returned home from a long day at work, and turned on the xbox and all the TV/entertainment-center items, and tried to turn on some Netflix to watch TV with dinner, I was presented with the most idiotic set of update options I have ever seen:

- Update 1GB update and device is unusable during the 1-2 hours this will take

- Go offline, and have nothing work

- Turn xbox off

Seriously? I can't imagine how you could design this more to *** people off.

You have designed the Xbox One to target being an entertainment center for the whole living room.

But apparently you think it's okay for people to wait 1-2 hours before using said living room devices.

The sane thing would have been to allow the update to download WHILE THE XBOX WAS FUNCTIONAL and online.

But the idea that I come home and want to watch tv, or amazon, or netflix, or ANY of the things your company went to great effort to setup so that the xbox was the core of the system, all takes a back seat, because you all decided that the update had to
happen right now.

A small security patch I could understand, but a 1GB update will take 1-2 hours, given how horrendously slow downloads from you all go.

Now I suspect the first thing someone will say is: just leave it on so that it patches overnight.

I would _love_ to do that.

However, the system is so flaky that after 2-3 days of being on in that mode, all sorts of things stop working, or get flaky. Games won't start. Video stutters like crazy. Apps crash.

This system was NOT designed to be stable enough to stay up for more than a day or two.

So you've given me a terrible choice:

1. Have the system patch itself, but it spends most of the time in degraded mode since the reliability is so bad after a couple days of being online, until I finally get so sick of the problems that I power cycle it.

2. Turn it all the way off every night, but be prepared to be locked out of the system spontaneously a couple times a year, for a couple hours, during prime time.

This is a complete and utter failure, if the goal is to make the xbox be the center of entertainment in the living room.

My TV does not decide to update itself and NOT work while it's doing that, on it's schedule.

My Satellite DVR does update itself, but I can delay it. Plus it's stable enough that it can stay online for weeks at a time.

And that's really sad, that the POC satellite DVR which was clearly outsourced to the lowest bidder in India, is more reliable to leave online for days at a time. Than my $400 xbox.

This was a major fail people.

Yeah for BF4!!

I enjoyed MW2 despite it's obvious broken mechanics. Had those mechanics been fixed I think it would've been the best CoD of the lot (although IMO it is the best).

- Been this way since MW2 was utterly broken and 3arc came in with BO1, which i thought was going to be terrible, and turned out to be great IMO.

The teams are always looking to improve the console experience and the update you're seeing is the Xbox Summer Update which adds a great deal of functionality and features to the console such as Cortana and the new Xbox Store, which will now be consistent
across Windows 10 PC's and Xbox.

We understand not wanting to have to wait for an update, though we'd recommend having the console in

Instant On mode so the updates work seamlessly. I understand that this isn't something you're wanting to do per se, but this will greatly improve your experience overall.

Did you not actually read my post? A solid third of it is about why Instant On mode is broken and not reasonable to use at this time.

I have used Instant On mode, and it does NOT "greatly improve my experience overall".

It makes my experience terrible after about day 2 of the system being on without restarting.

When you switch between apps, the video stutter makes video unwatchable. This pretty much ruins the main non-gaming purpose of the Xbox, playing video.

That is not to mention the other ways in which the system becomes flaky: functionality spontaneously not working, apps won't start, etc.

Please read entire posts before responding to them.

I read your post, though I'm just trying to get to the root cause of what the issue is. It seemed like you had more ideas and suggestions to change the process than an issue with the console updating. Is that accurate? Or did you have a problem with the
update installing or another support issue?

You mentioned that the console seems to lag or stutter when changing apps. Have you tried a console refresh on the system yet? It's like a Factory Reset, only you don't need to reinstall your Games and Apps. You just need to re-download your profile and
here's how to do that.

1. Scroll left on the Home screen to open the guide.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select All Settings.
4. Select System.
5. Select Console info & updates.
6. Select Reset console.

After that, you'll just need to select "Reset and keep my games & apps"
