Using mono/stereo headset for chat breaks Dolby Atmos on Xbox Series X and One X

    Hi,

My goal is to use my surround sound audio systems with height channels (Atmos/DTSX) while using a mono headset for in game chat, etc. I do not use the headset for game audio.

I've have a Xbox One X and a Series X hooked up as such:

    One X:

HDMI out from One X to Denon AVR X6500H via 48Gbs HDMI cable (using 12 bit color)

Denon passes video via HDMI to LG 77C8 OLED (120Hz refresh, but no eARC, VRR, or ALLM)

The audio is a 5.2.4 setup for Atmos/DTSX

    Series X:

HDMI out from Series X to LG 65CX OLED (via HDMI 1 with 10 bit color) - HDMI 2.1 compliant features, etc.

LG is set to pass audio to Vizio Elevate 5.1.4 Atmos/DTSX soundbar from HDMI 2 (eARC) to HDMI ARC on the soundbar

    Both cables are 48Gbs cables

Note, the 65CX does/will not pass DTS audio, and it has a bug for consistently passing uncompressed 5.1/7.1 audio.

My headsets are generic mono open ear headsets with boom mics (I've tested 3: 1 from Verizon and 2 from Plantronics - MX150 & MX250). They are the kind of headsets you would use on your mobile or desk phone. The headsets have 2.5mm jacks and connect to
the Xbox controllers via 3.5mm jack adapters. I'm using Xbox Elite series one and new Xbox Series X controllers. I assume all Xbox One controllers behave the same - the original controllers without 3.5mm jack may behave differently with the Xbox headphone
adapter, but I'm not able to test that.

Audio setups without headset plugged in:

    One X:

Speaker audio: Bitstream out (via HDMI - no optical plugged in)

Bitstream format: Dobly Atmos for home...

    Series X:

    Speaker audio: Bitstream out

Bitstream format: Dobly Atmos for home...

    Headset audio on both Xboxes:

    Headset format: Stereo uncompressed

As soon as I plug a mono headset into a controller, both Xboxes change the Speaker audio out to whatever was previously selected. For One X, it was 7.1 uncompressed, and for the Series X is was Bitstream out for Dolby Digital. The One X will also default
back to Dolby Digital if that was previously selected. This would be fine if I didn't have an Atmos/DTSX setup. Both consoles are capable of sending Bitstream out when the headset is connected, but they are breaking when Bitstream is set to Atmos (and I
    assume DTSX as well).

I understand that this is not considered a bug, and there are "Series X compatible" headsets out there, but they are for a different use case (ie. no game sounds for your family and no family sounds for the gamer - closed ear headphones).

Please enable enhanced bitstream output on the Xbox consoles when a headset is plugged in.

    Thanks!

    :)

Unable to use chat headset and HDMI surround sound on OneX and SeriesX

When I say working as intended, I mean that it is working as it was designed to work - not necessarily a reflection on the expectations of the user, but the expectation set when the execution of the systematic functions occurs.

I asked: "If a user is trying to use a mono headset for chat and wants game audio through their surround sound system to still play Dolby Atmos or DTS through HDMI output while its connected, is that possible?"

    The answer:

    • A Mono headset that is only used for chat/party and does not change the audio settings selected by the user. So, if a user chooses Dolby Atmos for home theater, the audio will continue to be in Atmos.
    • Only a stereo Headset will switch it.
    • Additional Edit: if the system recognizes the headset as a mono headset no audio setting changes, and it can only be used by chat.
Is the screenshot you shared in your report what appears when the headsets you have pictured earlier in the thread are plugged in? Are those headsets made for any kind of gaming aspect or are they just standard headsets for use on different devices? And on the Headset Audio are their additional options that open for the audio? This setting specifically:

Hi, I use the Hyper X Cloud X headset, and I have to say it's a very good headset. Works really well with Dolby Atmos as well.

Dolby Atmos delay on Xbox Series X

Well yes. The problem is constant. Whenever you’re in a game that uses Dolby atmos or even on Netflix through the series x. It needs a software patch to fix it. Delay is present on all Dolby atmos content
