Using Microsoft Points to Purchase Xbox Gift Card

There is no way to gift content over Live. What you would need to do is purchase a Microsoft points card or Microsoft gift card and he can use that to add currency to his account to purchase the content.

Microsoft points were discontinued in 2013. You can add currency to your Microsoft account balance by purchasing Xbox gift cards and use that to make purchases.

Microsoft Points cards work the exact same way as Xbox Live Gift Cards. A 1400 Points card bought for $20 will put $20 in your Microsoft Account for example.

Microsoft Points cards you purchase in retail stores will continue to be redeemable on your console and Xbox.com until further notice. Microsoft has no plans to discontinue acceptance of previously purchased Microsoft Points cards and codes. Xbox gift cards
will be available for purchase in retail stores and through online retailers starting in late 2013. Availability of Microsoft Points cards varies by region.

Thanks for reaching out to the forums. We see you have a question on redeeming rewards. This is possible if you redeem for the correct currency. There are two types: Xbox gift card and Microsoft Gift cards. You would need to redeem the points for the Microsoft
gift card then use that to purchase the controller.

Are the gift cards you have show "Microsoft Points" instead of your local currency? These types of gift cards have been discontinued years ago, and have moved to local currencies since.

This move from MSP (Microsoft Points) have then since enabled the sharing of your Microsoft Account Balance to be used on your Xbox One, and Windows purchases. As of now, it isn't possible to purchase Xbox 360 games young Microsoft Account Balance.

edit: No, you do not need Xbox Live Gold to redeem any currency-based gift cards.
