Using Hdmi for DVI, optical for audio

OK, here's the thing. My TV overscans, quite a fair bit, on HDMI - whereas with DVI it is perfect but I obviously have no audio. Now, the TV uses a HDMI port for DVI so I don't need/want an HDMI to DVI convertor.

My question then is, using the HDMI/DVI setup this way is it possible to use an optical lead (from the Xbox to a soundbar) for the audio?

Also, if the soundbar idea works, will audio from my cable box still work (being plugged into the Xbox HDMI pass through)?

I'm just wondering if this is a viable option before I go out and buy a soundbar or a new TV.

    Thanks

    :)

  2. S/Pdif to RCA Audio Adapter for Xbox One

Xbox One has 2 outputs - one HDMI and one Optical Audio (s/pdif). HDMI carries both audio and video. But if you want to send your audio to a receiver that does not have HDMI inputs, then you can use the optical output from Xbox One. PS4 is exactly the
    same.

And William is right - if you try converting HDMI to DVI, you will lose the audio on both Xbox and PS4 (unless you are using the separate optical output for audio).

  3. Xbox one to a VGA monitor?

@IceStorm III : Not sure what you are talking about .. any HDMI/DVI converter will convert an HDMI signal to DVI and I have yet to see one that is powered. I use them all the time on various devices. The
only issue is that DVI carries no audio signal so it is video only. You only need the HDMI cable to connect it.

@SpeedyRobo : Unfortunately I have only seen 2 types of video + audio adapters like you are considering ... the VGA/3.5mm which is basically using analog/SD, or ones that support digital (HD) DVI + coaxial/optical
audio. I don't think there is one that crosses thresholds for audio, and the XBOne has only either the HDMI or the optical out.
