Using an External Hard Drive... Ridiculously Slow!?

    Hey there guys.

    Yesterday I bought a Seagate, 2TB Hard Drive. It's USB 3.0.

It's working on the Xbox One - but it's taking literally HOURS to install games? And normally when you power down the Xbox, it still installs the games? This doesn't work on an external hard drive, I'm guessing?

I'm currently installing Diablo III, and it's only on 50% and it has been installing for like 5 hours... (maybe a slight exaggeration, but at least 4 hours).

    My question(s) is / are;

Do you use an External Hard Drive?

How fast do your games install on your External Hard Drive?

Do you have any tips on how to speed it up? (I've already done a hard reset on the Xbox One - it's made no difference!)

The Hard Drive cost me £65 and it requires a power source to work. I'm not sure if Tesco will accept a return as it's been opened / used. Any advice?

    Thanks.

Live Long and May the Force be With You.

    :)

  2. Using External Hard Drive ?

@GrowlingYapper I own a 4TB external HD that I use to play media off of on my Xbox 360. It was a bit of a pain getting it to recognize it as well as recognize it as a media player which are two totally different things. Do you know if a 4TB would work as
a media player on an Xbox One. I plan on grabbing a one but want to use my external as a media drive and have no intentions of using it as a stroage for games, etc.

    Using External Hard Drive ?

Just to jump on, here, in addition to what Growling said, not only should the external drive work "as fast" as the internal drive, but for most people, I've heard that the External Drive actually vastly speeds up the responsiveness of the console! I own
a 3TB drive, and my console runs great with it. Plus, I only have about 9% full out of 3TB, and I own about 10 games.

Using an External Hard Drive... Ridiculously Slow!?

    Hey,

I have an external 2tb Seagate too, and Expansion I believe it was called. Similar price range so it may be the same drive.

The speed is directly comparable to the internal in my case. In fact with USB 3.0 its possible a drive may be faster. But not enough to seriously notice.

You never mentioned if the install was from disc, if not it opens the possibility of something else. It could be the drive but more likely some other problem. You could always reformat and test the drive on a PC or laptop and see what transfer speeds are
like. By the time you have formatted back the problem could have disappeared.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I use a Seagate 4tb and dont notice any difference in speeds. As for installing when the console is off check settings under power and startup and see if the box is checked to turn off storage when the console is off.

I use a WD passport 2TB and installs are the same as the internal (loading times are slightly faster)

Maybe its the game? Diablo 3 had a couple of meaty patches which will d/load during the install process, and may be why its going so slow?

Using an External Hard Drive... Ridiculously Slow!?

Mellor44, that is the same one I am using, but it seems to be very slow for some reason. :/ The games were installing from the Digital Store - however I did install Titanfall from the disc which didn't take as long as any other games are taking to install.

Neuroteic Hog, Diablo finally installed around an hour ago! It did take a LONG TIME, so I am hoping it was just updates and patches!

16:15 - I had started installing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game from the Digital Store. I will post again when it finally installs! (So probably in around 10 hours time, lol).

Thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated.

    17:15 - 53% complete...

is it normal for a game that's only 9.9 GB in space to take 2 hours to install?

It is known to happen when games are updating at the same time from what I have read. Somebody else will know for sure, but I think there is a trick to install first and then update.

I haven't ever had a problem they have all said they are ready to play within 15 mins. Even if that just means you can get on the main menu, often not able to start a game. But the whole process has never taken long for me. I do have a fast fiber connection
though if that makes a difference, i'm not sure.

@BiTrekual - your downloading a 10gb game from the digital store, you started it at 4.15 and at 5.15 it was over half way, what is your download speed as that will be affecting your times.

Sorry guys, my internet speeds vary between 14 - 15 MB/s.

I made sure that the External Hard Drive setting was to 'Stay On' when the Xbox is powered down - but for some reason, it didn't carry on with the games installing over night.

Mr Boozyhead - installing from a disc is quite fast, but downloading / installing from the store seems to be slow.

It might just be the internet speed as I am used to high speeds back at my old house, but I recently moved in with my girlfriend and he internet isn't as fast... maybe it's time I leave her? lol!

    Thanks for all the support.
