Using an external hard drive for media

OK... I hope someone understands me and can help Using an external hard drive for media :D

For years I used my 360 for watching films on my xbox from my 2tb external hard drive. Then one day it just wouldn't work. The hard drive works on my PS3 and computers. But the portable device option on my 360 always stays grey.

I thought it was just the USB connections had decided to die.

So today I bought another 360 and get the same problem.

Is there something stupid Im not doing? Is there a new setting I need to tick?

Its fat32 formatted and like I said works on every other device.

    :)

Xbox One no longer recognizes my external hard drive's media content after the update

Before the update I had no issue at all plugging my external hard drive in and using the "media player" app to watch everything. Ever since I downloaded the new update when I launch the media player app I get the "No devices found" message. Is this a known
    issue? Are there any solutions?

The external is a Seagate 1TB external hard drive.

I should note here it recognizes my hard drive as a storage device, but no longer the media content on it.

  3. External HDD re-format

Once an external hard drive is formatted for games and apps, can it be re-formatted back to media? I have changed my mind on using my 2TB drive on my box.

    Thanks

Format with default settings on your computer and have the Xbox format it.

Why all of a sudden do i need to format it though? It worked for ages then stopped, Did Xbox update something?

The Xbox updated their format from their propriatary (incredibly stupid) Fat32 system, to just Fat32, which allows for externals to use more room. Up to 2 TB, from something like 16 GB?

Copy files from Mac to Xbox One external HDD ?

    Hi,

Not sure what you wanted to do here, could you elaborate?

As for external hard drives, you can't partition them for use as both external storage for games and for use with your Mac or PC. You can use an external hard drive on the Xbox One as a media drive, though.

If you format an external hard drive for Xbox One games storage, the whole drive is formatted and the file system is changed.

    Issues with installation

I'm gonna be more specific: the game doesn't accept installation on external storage. Whether it's flash drive or external hard drive, the game isn't meant to install on external storage connected through USB just like Need for Speed Rivals on Xbox 360.
You need to install it on an internal hard drive (media hard drive). The link I provided to you aren't external hard drives; they're internal hard drives for the Xbox 360:
