Using a external hard drive on xbox one

I have a 6tb WD external hard drive that I will be connecting to my xbox one console to store my games on and for some reason after taking the console out to the box and connecting it up to me console by usb, the console should be giving me the option to
format and use as a game storage external drive and name it.

But that is not happening and instead it is automatically designating it as a media storage drive for music and pictures.

It will not let me change this in the settings manage storage and has anybody else had this happen to them and how do I fix this? Should I format the drive 1st on my PC in windows?

    Help would be appreciated.

    :)

I was using a 1TB external hard drive with my XBox One. I upgraded to the Xbox One S and I do not need the external hard drive anymore. Is there a way to reformat the external hard drive so that I can use it as a back up for my pc? Any help would be much

  3. Xbox One will not recognize second external hard drive

    Hello All:

I have an xbox one. I have been using two external hard drives with it. Recently the xbox stopped recognizing that the second hard drive was connected. I figured the hard drive quit working, so I purchase a new 4tb Seagate Xbox External Hard Drive to
use. I plugged it in and the xbox did not recognize it either. I have done hard reboots, switch usb ports, switch cables, etc... and nothing that I do gets the xbox to recognize either the original second external hard drive that was working perfectly or
the new second external hard drive. Even when I remove the first external hard drive, and hard reboot, the xbox will still not recognize the either the new external hard drive or the drive that had worked well in the past as a second external hard drive.
I figure something is wrong with my xbox one. Please advise what I should do.

    Thank you!

Using a external hard drive on xbox one

    Hey there, @Erich68CS

This is weird as your Xbox One should be compatible with the WD external drive. If it's recognized as a media storage, it means that it's not meeting the external storage requirements.

My suggestion would be to perform the partitioning and formatting of your WD external HDD on your PC through Disk Management and then try plugging it back to the Xbox One.

Hopefully this would get the drive properly detected.

Here's a tutorial from our knowledge base that can help you with the procedure:

Hope it helps. Keep me posted! Using a external hard drive on xbox one :)

ok so I just took the brand new WD 6TD my book external hard drive out of the box, connected it by the usb cord into the usb port on the console and for some reason the console recognized it as a media storage devise for music and pictures. It did not let
me format the drive or choose to use it to store my saved games. I then connected the drive to my windows pc that is using windows 8.1 and formatted it and when I re-connected the drive to my xbox one console it still recognized it as a media drive. I have
no idea why it is doing this.

I also am using a 3.0 usb hub that should allow a proper connection from the external hard drive to the console so that the console recognizes it as a drive for storing games.

    Hi Erich,

is the drive itself USB 3? Does it give the same message if you directly connect into the xbox? Also are you using an enclosure with a WD drive versus a bought sealed ext.HDD?

I have seen reports of problems with enclosures so that could be one cause. Also if the drive itself is not usb 3 then the xbox might be detecting that and limiting it for media only. Please post back with the specs of your drive and we can go from there.

    Hi again, @Erich68CS!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your annoying issues with the formatting of the WD My Book external. Using a external hard drive on xbox one :( Have you tried using the Storage settings on your Xbox One to format it for games & apps, after the Windows PC partitioning/formatting?

If it still isn't detected properly by your console, I'd recommend you to test the external HDD's health and SMART status using WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostic on your PC. You should run both the quick and the extended test from the utility. Here's a link
    to it:
    products.wdc.com/.../kb.ashx

Be patient with the extended test, it could take some time for a 6 TB HDD.

Keep me posted with the results.

    Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to hear that the issue is persistent on the External Hard Drive.

Have you tried connecting the hard drive to a PC?

Does the PC recognize the external hard drive?

Does the external hard drive meet the specifications for the Xbox One?

If the problem persists, I recommend to try a different external hard drive on the Xbox if possible. One thing we want to make sure, Are the ports on the Xbox One functioning?

    Let us know.

Copy files from Mac to Xbox One external HDD ?

    Hi,

Not sure what you wanted to do here, could you elaborate?

As for external hard drives, you can't partition them for use as both external storage for games and for use with your Mac or PC. You can use an external hard drive on the Xbox One as a media drive, though.

If you format an external hard drive for Xbox One games storage, the whole drive is formatted and the file system is changed.

External Hard Drive with Xbox 360

Could your friend be talking about an external hard drive with an Xbox One. You can use an external usb 3.0 hard drive with that console, but you can only use external storage upto 32gb on an xbox 360.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for your post. I understand you are attempting to use an external hard drive for your Windows 10 PC and Xbox One. When you format a hard drive and install games for use on Xbox One, the hard drive will need to be exclusive to the Xbox One. If you
begin to move files onto your external hard drive from a PC you will need to reformat for further use with the Xbox One. For more info, check out:
