Yes sorry it was 15. I tried the xbox 360 thing and it still displays my 12 character name but when you click on my profile it says my old 15 one in smaller print.

The old limit was 15 characters so your old gamertag couldn't of been 16 characters long.

You might still be able to change to a tag with more than 12 characters if you do it on a xbox 360 console unless they've fixed that workaround but other than that then you will have to stick with the 12 character limit.

If you have security proofs on that account like a phone number or alternate email, please try to check this from the username recovery and check what hint you will get for the email.

Besides the email, the account recovery form (second link) works with a previously linked phone number, or Skype username.

If you don’t recall linking a phone number, or creating a Skype username. I regret to inform you that your account can’t be recovered.

I recently installed the PlayOnline thing on my new console and decided to return. Too bad there's no "forgot your username/password" recovery system.
