USD vs. CAD Game Pricing.

Hi there, I would like to know why there's such an imbalance in XBox One game costs in Canada vs. the US. The difference is far beyond the exchange rate. Forza 6 for example is 29.99 USD, and 59.99 CAD. Applying the current exchange rate, Forza 6 should
be 39.99 CAD.

Download or Disc? Which one will you do?

Love both digital and disc. I buy 95% of my games on disc because of the high digital product pricing. Current example: COD BO1 new disc 20€ (USD 26) vs. digital download via XBL 70€ (USD 91) Digital pricing should follow more closely the "real" market
value of the games. And if we go all the way digital will the MS be able to set prices all by itself? Competition is always good for the consumer. I have no love for sovjetized monopolies.

The prices are largely set by the publishers who set digital pricing to the same MSRP as physical discs. Depending on things like taxes, the prices may be set higher in other countries.

 

It's the taxes in canada that cause that price jump, not an exchange rate thing.

 

That is absolutely not true at all. There are more taxes in New York and California than there are in Alberta, Canada (5% sales tax), and tax is applied after the purchase.

Furthermore, this would imply that Microsoft has some sort of special tax situation that Steam for example does not. I own hundreds of Steam games, and I buy them in CAD at nothing more than the cost adjusted for the USD exchange rate.

Forza is published by Microsoft. This being a Microsoft forum should yield an answer that Microsoft knows.

 

Example: Monster Hunter World on Steam.

USD 59.99

CAD 74.99

Exchange converted rate: 78.10 CAD.

It's actually lower than the exchange converted value (which changes daily, but they've clearly been conservative and competitive about it).

 

Another example, also by Microsoft Studios... Flight Simulator X.

USD: 24.99

CAD: 27.99

Exchange converted value: 32.54.

That's far lower than the actual exchange rate. So I feel like XBox game pricing is just broken and needs to be severely corrected before I spend another dime.

 

I'm not referring to sales tax. The companies are charged other taxes and tariffs when they ship physical discs. They add that into their MSRP.
