USB drive no longer appears under storage devices.

I'm using the 3.0 'Patriot Rage XT' 16GB USB drive.

-Lights up and blinks for a second when I plug it into a USB port or my PC, but nothing more than that.

-Tried all USB ports, front and back of Xbox 360. No luck.

-Plugged it into my PC but (I'm assuming) because it's formatted to the Xbox 360, it doesn't appear as a drive. Drive Properties shows, 0 bytes free space, 0 bytes used space.

-Also Xbox 360 IS up to date.

It use to show up as an external drive in the system memory for years, but now all of a sudden only the internal memory is shown. I really don't want to format it since I have a lot of game files and online expansions saved onto it. I haven't played on my
Xbox for almost a year, no idea why it would just suddenly disappear off the dashboard. Any suggestions?

    :)

Playing movies from USB connected to router (not Nas)

Yep looks like you are ok

"File Sharing Right at Your Fingertips

Connect a USB storage device to your DIR-868L to create a shared storage space, making it easy to access and share files between computers and devices connected to your network. Plug in a USB hard drive to stream your library of videos and music to your laptop. Plus, the SharePort™ Mobile app for iOS and Android devices allows you to back up photos and videos stored on your device. You can even customise your shared storage space by creating separate accounts to control access to the USB drive, so you can share your music with everyone but keep your personal files private. This Cloud Router can also be used as a media server for your home to stream media stored on your USB storage drive to any DLNA compliant player like the Boxee Box by D-Link."

USB drive no longer appears under storage devices.

Sorry to hear it. This happens with flash drives when they get old. Unfortunately the console will stop recognizing them at which point they'll need to be reformatted on your pc for the console to see them again.

To prevent this in the future why not consider getting an Official Xbox hard drive or, if you don't want to, you can now get an external hard drive for your console up to 2TB in size for extra storage.

I'm sorry I should have said, I've only had it for almost 2 years. I just can't see it failing that quickly, especially being one of the high end USB drives and the fact that I haven't used it for almost a year.

I have cheap flash drives that I've loaded and unloaded files/games/movies etc, that have been working for 10+ years on my PC.

This does still happen regardless of age. I've had it happen to a few flash drives myself. Formatting on the pc before configuring them for use on the console helps but they will still eventually fail.

2 years is about right for a USB thumb drive. They have a finite number of reads/writes. Once that number is reached, they're useless. Don't use USB thumb drives.

USB drive no longer appears under storage devices.

I dont think this is an issue of the drives being old, i am having the same issue, my drives were showing up a few days ago and now they are not. I have 2 different drives with games on them and neither of them will show up. I plugged in an unformatted drive
    and it is showing up.

Again, like I mentioned, USB thumb drives are very notorious for failing quickly--they're cheap storage mediums and don't have the best compatibility. Your drive will show up as unformatted if there have been any changes to the file system. This almost
always happens when your drive is close to failing, or if any other modifications have been made (some PC apps can do that). If you haven't plugged your thumb stick into a PC, then it's either close to failure or so cheap that file corruption can ocurr.

I understand that thee things are made cheap and not meant to last but I had an external drive and a usb flash drive both stop showing up at the same time though.
