Does this happen to everyone? Does anyone have a media player app that plays movies off of a usb without ever getting any errors?

  3. I am having the same problem. It's so *** that my videos from my pc stream perfectly fine, despite my horrible cable connection but it won't play longer than 15 mins from my usb drive that's connected directly to the xbox one. Microsoft is so pathetic, I
better make a switch to PS4 soon.

I am also having this very same issue. Please Microsoft fix this. on top of this there are several other things with the media player that makes it feel like it was a last minute decision. The Xbox 360 video player is far superior in my mind which is sad.
Here are a few of the things they need to add/change. The most important thing would be able to stop and then resume your video at a later time. Currently if you exit you have to go back into the video and fast forward all the way to the point where you left
off. Speaking of, when you fast forward it would be nice to see a small thumbnail preview of the video so you don't have to just guess since you don't know exactly where you got disconnected. On the xbox 360 I would often tap on the thumb stick to pull up
the info of how far into the video I was. Now unfortunately this will cause your xbox one to skip to the next video in the playlist. When you pair this with the no resume function it is a horrible cycle. Lastly it would be nice to have chapter support so you
can skip though a video and quickly find where you want to be. I will say one positive thing though and that is I am very happy the Xbox one supports MKV files now.

I've just bought my xbox about a week ago. Tonight has been the first time I've tried connecting my 1tb external hdd, and yeah I'm finding the same issue you guys are reporting. I get between 15 - 30 minutes of watching before it disconnects. But instantly
it pops back up as connected, so it's as if the power is only cut for a split second.

As anyone discovered any further info or a fix for this?

Formatting the USB drive solved the problem for me. Do this via Disk Utility on a Mac.

Google for full instructions. I have a Seagate 1tb.

Although a small update but at least an update however I think we all knew Microsoft could produce this already and didn't want to say they had. I feel now that as more and more users are experiencing this issue Microsoft felt they had to now tell us something
and with the mysterious and very slow investigation team taking 6-7 months to watch a media file through ANY device, it seems someone finally decided to do this.

I like the 'Microsoft are not taking the blame for this or acknowledging it is actually a Microsoft issue' line you added to say 'For now, though, we don't need any more device', which implies you are still blaming devices and possibly may require more going
forward or at a later date.

I wish you could be honest and just say, this is a Media Player App issue and it is most certainly NOT a device issue unless you mean that every compatible USB, or external hard drive which can be connected to the Console experiences this issue, then sure,
every single manufacturer of devices are to blame.....I wonder if they would like to hear that their devices are being blamed for a fault in which we all know lies with Microsoft.

Strange how every single compatible device work just fine with all PC's, laptops, Xbox 360's, and EVERY other machine that allows USB connections, but just not the Xbox One........very strange!!!!!!!!!

here is how to reproduce it. go to walmart and buy an xbox one. install the media player on it. then put any downloaded video(mkv, avi, mp4, ect) on a flash drive or hard drive and play all. just let it play for a while and it will eventually happen. it
may be within a few minutes and it can take over an hour. the xb1 doesn't seem to discriminate against any type or brand of drive. have the drive plugged directly into the xb1. if u stream it from a computer thru an Ethernet cable it won't happen. u must have
the drive plugged directly into the console. let me know if this trick doesn't give u the same problems as it has given all of us misses quinzel.

I'm getting the same problem while streaming from my Windows 8.1 PC. I had almost no problems streaming from my Windows 7 PC. It would happen occasionally, but now it happens 2 seconds in. Sometimes files won't even open. .mp3, .mp4, .avi, .mkv. It doesn't
    matter. They all close.
