this has never ever happened to me after years of using the xbox 360. when the Media Player preview or beta first came out it seemed to do it right away, maybe after 10 seconds. i thought this was intentional, like a trial limitation. but now i have been
using Media Player, fully up to date as of this month (feb 2015) and i tried changing the "off with console" setting. i have this issue with mkv files as well, despite what one user above has posted.

some more details: when the video freezes, sometimes it resumes after a few seconds, only to freeze again later usually. sometimes i can pause and resume and it works, sometimes i have to press pause/play several times. sometimes i can stop the playback
and restart the file (which starts at the beginning, rather than resuming my place like the 360 did.) but most of the time when i stop the playback it will back me out to the list of files. the one that froze, and all the files after (and sometimes also
before) will have no thumbnail, as though it can't read from the drive. if i try to play it again it will usually say no videos found in this folder. i have to manually go to the start screen, press Quit on the media player. then for some reason the app
will not start again right away, the workaround i found is to run some other app first like Settings, then Quit that and restart Media Player. this may be just because some time has passed, as i started to realize i could just wait about a minute or less
and then Media Player would start again. of course that doesn't matter because it ALWAYS freezes again sooner or later.

your solution makes no difference, it still happened after a few minutes. i changed the setting and did a hard reboot. it does not work. it is broken. PLEASE fix this. this is absolutely unacceptable. we didn't pay good money for our consoles to be
garbage. also it should be a step up, not down, from the 360. please please fix this, and add resumable bookmarks to the video files.

also i tried using the back usb port, as i had been using the side port, since it was easier to access. it still happens no matter what port or device or files. clearly as all the above posts indicate, this app is BROKEN. FIX IT!

  4. USB device unavailable HELP!!!!!

Same problem here. USB formatted to NTFS, FAT32, doesn't matter. "USB device unavailable" after 10-25 minutes of video viewing. I have 'turn off storage...' deselected in settings as well and power down the console as well as restarted.

It seems to me to be a software issue with the Media Player App.

  5. Thanks so much, guys! Your formatting for the Xbox One should be only NTFS, not FAT32, so be sure that you have them set to that when you are formatting your hard/flash drives.

I completely understand your frustration with your videos freezing. I'm not one to just let that slide, either. To pass along this information to the appropriate teams, I will need to know what devices you are using (brand, model, USB speed) and what type
of files you are trying to watch. Post back with these items, and I will make sure the right people are notified. USB device unavailable HELP!!!!! :) Thanks for your cooperation in getting this resolved!

    Misses Quinzel,

So everyone has no doubt tried the toggling with Settings > Power > "When Xbox is off, turn off storage" etc however it does not work for me. Also it may be a small workaround and to be honest, I want this option checked as I want my device to power off
when the Xbox is turned off.

I think Microsoft have enough examples and thousands of people having this issue, why can it not be fixed? It seems Microsoft is becoming too obsessed with performing a release a month or listen to users who want transparent tiles rather than resolve the
issues of the console, especially one which is relied upon daily.

This is not to say the updates received are not great or good, but I’d rather have the apps working on the console than new features being installed which might cause more bugs to the already buggy apps.

Also for brand, model USB speeds, for me it happens to every device I have tried, from several USB sticks to many external hard drives as well as various read/write speeds. It does not matter, it is not working correctly so it needs to be fixed rather than
    continually investigated.

File types, every single one it can happen with, get your own Xbox One, plug in a hard drive and try watching some video files, or get one person to do this daily and he/she can write an issue report, but from what I have read, it is for every file.

I probably use the Xbox One more as a hub to watch media that to play games so maybe I have noticed it more than most, however it should be fixed soon as it has been a while now and gamers are already annoyed that SkyGo and other apps from their 360 are
not on their new console, you don't want to keep annoying them with their Media App not working, do you?

  7. Hey there, Carbon! Thanks so much for the information. However, I need specific models of your devices and file types that you have used so that the investigating teams can test those out. Please post back with those for me and I will pass that along. USB device unavailable HELP!!!!! :)

    USB device unavailable HELP!!!!!

Imagine every model of hard drive and usb available and every type of file in existence (or those that Xbox One supports) , the issue with the app happens with all of these....

This is not a device problem, we can all see that, this is a media player bug or issue. Microsoft already know this as they advised this to me through their online chat function.

I can give you what i have tried with and you can of course, pass it on, but this is not the issue and it is either being over complicated by asking for all this information or Microsoft are trying to divert the issue and blame devices as the cause rather
    than the app......

How will Microsoft test this, will they go and buy all these devices and try each file type? probably not as this makes no sense. All they need to do is get an Xbox One, get any USB or external hard drive and put all files on this accepted by Xbox One. Get
someone to test this and when the issue happens (as it will), then they have first hand experience of the issue.

Can you advise what microsoft is aiming to achieve by everyone sending their device models and file types? can they let us know what they have tested so far from what has been received and what the outcome of those tests were?

This is simple functional testing, which is done prior to a release of any new hardware/software in all companies.

I know you are trying to help but i am going to guess this will continue for another 6 months, or maybe forever and instead we will be subjected to fan based releases looking at offer controllers a faster connect time to the console from 4 secs down to 2
secs, which has no influence on me whatsoever, rather than just spending a little more time, carrying out some tests of their own on the media app...

Here are two which i can provide for now, again it wont help but it seems this is a way to show Microsoft really want to know this and be seen as though this is helping, but infact it is a way to stop people messaging about it and thinking it is being looked
    at.....when it probably isn't.

Links to the two devices i have to hand, others i can send later.....and it is with all files supported by Xbox One, so you have this list already.....

  9. Thanks so much, Carbon! As this is not a wide spread issue, we need to gather the information from those that are experiencing the disconnects and troubleshoot with it. I have passed along your information. Once I have an update for you, I will bump this
thread. USB device unavailable HELP!!!!! :)

I can verify that the media player has been crashing since I've first installed it last year when it came out. It doesn't matter what video I'm playing, or what length of time the video is, the media player will randomly crash with the message everyone that
uses the media player to watch videos from gets: "USB device unavailable". I am a preview member so I have been sending feedback with screenshots every time this happens, which sometimes is 2-3 times on the same video.

My USB device is a PNY 128G flash stick.

I can't imagine you saying this isn't a wide spread issue. I would guess that statement only makes sense if you compare the number of consumers using their X1 as a video player as opposed to a gaming system. If you compare it that way then yes, its not a
wide spread issue. But from the consumers that use the media player, this is a wide spread issue.

I have to re-iterate Carbon's concerns in that Microsoft is not focusing on the media player issue enough. I applaud that you guys are focusing on the gaming ... and rightfully so. But what differentiates X1 from the competition is its image of being the
"complete package". I have a friend that owns a PS3, and hasn't decided on whether he is going to get an X1 or a PS4. I can tell you that he primarily used his PS3 as a media player (Blu-ray, etc), and has been asking me what I think he should get as his entertainment
device. He knows I've been an Xbox loyalist for a lot of years now, but I'm having a hard time knowing how to sell him on getting an X1 because of all these "entertainment" issues that we all keep experiencing. Heck, when he's over watching a movie and the
media player crashes, it sucks when he tells me "and why should I get an X1 again?"

I know too many people that are casual gamers, and I'm not pushing them into getting an X1 because I don't want to look like an idiot when their systems crash.

  11. Hey there, Samurai2083! Since you are part of the preview program, you will want to continue to work with that team. Please post in the

'As this is not a wide spread issue' can I ask what information this comment is based on? I had assumed this was an issue with the half dozen usb sticks I've been using on my One. I would like to add my name into the hat please. The timeout for me whilst
watching is between 20~30 mins. Have followed all the suggestions here, however without any luck.

Please include me with ALL the others having this problem. I've been experiencing this since first day of purchase. Had to return to the 360 for video viewing as it got so frustrating. Appears to be an App problem not a USB Stick compatibility issue.

    FYI : 32GB Kingston Stick - DT101 G2

Will appreciate any positive news on this matter.

    Misses Quinzel,

Any update on the extensive testing or fault diagnosis being done by the Investigating teams or like most non urgent tasks, has this fallen behind another fan favourite of 'take a screenshot when playing a game'?

Recently, i have noticed things have gotten a little worse for me, i do not know if it was always like this or now i notice it much more because i have raised the issues with you several times (and with Microsoft chat, Twitter, Facebook and Email).

It is now disconnecting me around 2-3 times in the space of 40mins, when i go back to play the same file and try to fast forward to the point i was watching from (as Microsoft still have not enhanced the app to remember this) it again disconnects showing
the same error. When i then try and fast forward again or just go back to the file, it kicks me out of the app altogether, and takes me to the home page where i need to re enter the Media App and it loads up the USB or Hard Drive and i start again.

So before it mainly just kicked me out of the USB file, showing me an error that the USB is not connected but i am still inside the app, now it also kicks me out of the app completely and i need to re enter it from the home page.

Any update is all i am looking for, whether this is to say the Investigation team (if they exist) are looking at this and have so far tested 'x' devices, or whether, as we all suspect, there is no Investigation team and my suspicions are confirmed that this
    will not be fixed.

Is it worth sending my Xbox back to Microsoft and having it replaced with a console that actually works and performs like i expect it to, for example the PS4, or will Microsoft actually get around to Emailing or responding to finally resolve this.

Again i don't need to take screenshots or tell people my real name on the Xbox, who are these fans asking for these functions? Get me on the team to only test the Media App, feed this back and maybe someone will begin to listen, it seems this forum is becoming
less and less noticed and probably why Microsoft are not bothered about looking into the issue.........
