    TV Model and Brand: LG Electronics 65EF9500 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Flat Smart OLED TV (2015 Model)

    Soundbar Model and Brand: VIZIO S5451w-C2 5.1 Channel Sound Bar with Subwoofer and Surrounds (2014 Model)

    Exactly how you have your set up right now: Xbox One S plugged into TV (HDMI 1 input) with HDMI cable, Soundbar plugged into TV (HDMI 2 ARC input) with HDMI cable

    Vizio SB3851-D0 Smartcast38" Soundbar System (2016) model

    Connections used:

    Optical from Xbox to Sound Bar + Xbox to TV HDMI

    Optical from Tv to Soundbar + Xbox to Tv HDMI

    XBOX to Soundbar via HDMI, Soundbar to TV HDMI

    XBOX To TV HDMI, TV to Soundbar HDMI (ARC)

    I'm unable to send screenshots at this time, but with every combination I received The exact same error depicted by SpoopyJilan. Thank you for doing this, Much appreciated!

    TV Model and Brand: Samsung UN60JS8000 (2016 model)

    Soundbar Model and Brand: Samsung HWK550ZA 3.1 Channel with added optional 2.1 wireless speakers

    I spoke at length with some Xbox folks at MS and have some updates for everyone. Unfortunately, this issue is much more complex than it seems and not likely fixable by Xbox devs.

    - TVs send EDID information via HDMI for identity, my TV and some of yours are telling the Xbox "hey I can do stereo audio"

    - This used to not be a problem back in the 1080P/HDMI1.4 days because it was possible to set the Xbox output from Auto to HDMI, which sort of ignores the EDID info the TV sends

    - Now we're in the 4K/HDMI2.0/HDCP2.2 era there's a whole new set of HDMI compliance that Xbox must obey, which sort of means the ignoring the EDID is no longer allowed i.e. Xbox must send *only* stereo when the downstream device says so

    - Thus, our TVs being dumb and ignoring their downstream 5.1CH audio systems caused this whole issue, which is surfaced by the new 4K/HDMI2.0/HDCP2.2 thing

    What's the solution? Xbox can't really do anything about it at this point so I'm looking into getting LG to fix their stuff. I found some obscure forum threads (en.community.sonos.com/.../new-lg-tvs-and-51-pass-through-6558244)
    suggesting it's possible to fix my specific issue via the service menu. I'm gonna try it and report back

    I fixed the issue!



    I'm gonna post exactly how it went down in case somebody comes across this in the future

    Like I said earlier I discussed with Xbox devs and concluded that this is an issue with my TV. I did extensive (10 hours worth) research and found these resources that helped me immensely:

    I got the service remote from the Amazon link and went to EZ_Adjust menu -> password 0413 -> Tool Option7 -> EDID_TYPE and changed it from PCM to DTS. After this I turned the TV off using the service remote, waited 15 minutes, and turned it back on. It displayed
    "WebOS" as it did a full reboot. After that I was able to adjust to Bitstream out in the Xbox settings and get 5.1 Dolby Digital (yes it's weird that it had to be DTS earlier)! It does have some audio sync issues though, I'll try to solve it.

    EDIT: ok I changed the EDID_TYPE to AC3 and rebooted and it continued to work. In fact the weird little audio sync issue I was getting! Now it's 100% fixed.

  9. Wow, SpoopyJlian! This is awesome news! You've done so much while I was out sick yesterday!

    So, it looks like it's a TV issue that is causing this, if I'm reading what you've said correctly. Am I right?

    We will want to be sure we communicate that appropriately, and I want to take a deeper look into everything you did to resolve it. We may need to have an article put up with how to resolve this. Upgraded to Xbox One S now surround sound no longer works (0x80bd0009) :)

    It's an issue with TVs not sending their EDID properly ("I can do stereo sound") when there's a surround sound system attached. This issue has always existed but HDMI2.0/4K made it apparent.

    For LG TVs it seems like the only way to fix it is via the service menu (you could call LG support and they'll bring someone to your place with a service remote, or you could just buy a service remote).

    In some of the links above they talked about Samsun TVs and it seems like that's just a setting in the regular menu.

    I communicated with Aaron from Xbox supportability, and Beau from Xbox dev. If you reach them and asked about their conversation with jlian they should be able to tell you more about the root cause of this problem.

    Thank you for the information SpoopyJlian, that's amazing! your like a tech support forensic Detective... I was having some problems with the speakers on my sound bar so I Sent it back, and ordered a replacement that has 4K Ultra HD pass-through with HDCP
    2.2 support, It'll get here tomorrow, I'll post the outcome after I get it hooked up, if the problem is the tv sending incorrect EDID there shouldn't be an issue.

    Well... I upgraded to the Yamaha YHT-3920UBL, and tried the same myriad number of input/output combinations as before with the same resulting errors; I just had a rather lengthy conversation with Vizio's "P Seriessupport team"member: "Damion from Missouri."
    He told me that it's a firmware issue and doesn't know of a way to manually manipulate the EDID. He didn't say this but I think it's because the Vizio P series doesn't have an operating system per se, everything is handled by the Android tablet remote. Though
    when using the 4K passthrough on the Yamaha I encountered a whole new set of anomalies. So in order to document them for you in a productive way it's going to take me a couple days to put the information together to present it in a coherent manner. And to
    make that work, could one of you please tell me how to screen shot the dashboard/home screen? I know in game if I double tap the "X" I can take a shot but It doesn't seem to work while i'm in settings.

    After talking with the same people that Spoopy worked with, this issue is definitely a TV issue with the way it communicates with the soundbar.
