    Upgraded to Xbox One S now surround sound no longer works (0x80bd0009)


    I have a 4K TV (LG 65EF9500) and VIZIO S5451w-C2 (5.1) sound system.

    I ran into error code 0x80bd0009 trying to set up my new Xbox One S today. It happens when I tried selecting 5.1, 7.1 or Bitstream audio output.

    This did not happen before with my Xbox One.

    I found this thread

    But if I set the input to "HDMI" instead of "Auto" I lose 4K and HDR, which means it's effectively a non-S Xbox One.

    Did anyone else run into this problem?

    I can only use 5.1 when I reconfigure settings from auto detect (4k uhd) to manual HDMI (1080p) The issue is that I must choose between 4k HDR and 5.1 surround. They cannot both be used together. Need Help!!

    Hey there!

    What's the specific brand and model of the TV you own? Issues such as this normally come down to specific settings on the TV side that need to be changed.

    Here's an example forum thread
    of how a user was able to sort this issue out on their display.

  6. Hey, SpoopyJlian! Your soundbar, are you running your console through that as passthrough, or are both your console and soundbar plugged into your TV at the same time? If you are running it as passthrough (I'm not sure you can with this soundbar, but I definitely
    want to make sure), please plug your console and soundbar into the TV and see if that helps. Let me know!

    Thanks for getting back to me!

    I have both my console and soundbar plugged into my TV. My Xbox One S is connected to HDMI 1 and my soundbar is connected to HDMI 2 (ARC). It's the recommended setup.

    It's also the exact same setup as before with my old Xbox One.

    Again, with this setup I am not able to get surround sound on the S, which didn't happen with the non-S.

    Interesting. That should be going through just fine, then. The error code indicates to me that it doesn't recognize those options you're trying to set up; it seems that the Xbox One S isn't seeing your soundbar because it's going through the TV even though
    your original console did.

    Odd step, but does your soundbar have an optical port you can use to plug an optical cable from your console to your soundbar? I am wondering if you may need to do that extra step to get sound properly.

    If so, this might be by design, but I'll want to ask around and see for sure first. I want to see if you can get any sound at all out of that soundbar first doing that. Upgraded to Xbox One S now surround sound no longer works (0x80bd0009) :)

    I get sound, but only stereo (which sounds weird on my 5.1 system) through the Xbox One S + HDMI.

    I don't have a optical cable now, and I don't really want to buy one. I am 90% confident that surround would work with optical though but it would require me to switch inputs on my sound system (as well as TV) which I really don't want to do. I would strongly
    prefer running everything through HDMI.

    The problem isn't with my home theatre system. Everything was working 100% before I upgrade from Xbox One to Xbox One S. It's the only piece that's changed.

    I have a hard time understanding how "choose either 4K OR surround sound via HDMI' can be by design. It could be a limitation (lack of bandwidth via HDMI??) but that's something that should be clearly communicated.

    I do thank you for keeping me in the loop. However, I really don't think this is something that you and I can troubleshoot without a software update directly from the devs. Could you please ask for a dev to chime in to confirm if this is a limitation, and
    if it could be fixed?

  10. Most devs do not post on our forums in an official capacity. We do have a few that peek in here for the Xbox App, but that's really it.

    I do understand wanting to keep running everything HDMI. If you happen to get your hands on an optical cable while I am reaching out to people, give it a shot! But I'm not going to force you to purchase one. Upgraded to Xbox One S now surround sound no longer works (0x80bd0009) :)

    Honestly, I find it perplexing that it's like that, too. Because you had both before, I would expect it to be the same. However, the hardware is different, so it might be set up differently, too. That's what we need to confirm here.

    Let me see what I can dig up for you. I'll get back in here by tomorrow evening with any information I am able to gather!

    I'm having the exact same problem, I have a "2016 Vizio P Series" television and my sound system is VIZIO SB3851-D0 SmartCast38" 5.1 Sound Bar System (2016 Model) I have tried every conceivable connection combination from connection the Xbox one S to the
    sound bar directly via optical cable, to connection the Xbox to the display with the HDMI and then connecting the display to the sound bay with the optical cable, to connecting the Xbox to the sound bar directly with the HDMI and using ARC. And every-time
    I receive the "0x80bd0009" error when selecting selecting 5.1, 7.1 or Bitstream audio output. As well if I set the output from AUTO to HDMI, I do gain the desired sound output (which is drastically improved) but my ONE-S is no longer able to recognize the
    4k or HDR abilities for my display. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm at a complete loss as far as what to try next.

  14. Alright, guys. Looks like we want to dig into this. I need a ton of information, I'm going to post the same thing in the reddit thread you linked to, and we're going to get it to the right people to find out what's happening.

    I know some of this information is posted, but I wanted to have it a bit more organized so that I can gather it easier.

    • TV Model and Brand
    • Soundbar Model and Brand
    • Exactly how you have your set up right now (example: Xbox plugged into TV with HDMI cable, Soundbar plugged into TV with HDMI cable, optical cable plugged in from Xbox to Soundbar)
    • Screenshots of what your Audio Output settings look like; I will need what options you have, and then a screenshot of the error once you select whatever option (you will need to upload these to a file sharing site of your choice and then
      post the links back here for me)
    Once I have all of this information, I will get it handed off to others that can dig into this and investigate what's going on. I appreciate everyone's assistance trying to nail this down. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this once the right people

  15. this needs to be addressed immediately. MS has done sloppiness like this repeatedly. My whole point of upgrading from xbox one to xbox one s was for 4k and now i lose the surround sound capability. this is sad and ridiculous. Microsoft its 2016. If you wanna
    be in the technology field you need to know technology. there is absolutely no reason that 4k shouldn't have been tested in surround sound. How many people with 4k tv's are actually not using surround sound audio????? please update and get this fixed asap.
    the problem is simple. its not what tv the customer is using. I have a samsung. others have LG.. it doesn't matter the tv. the problem is when the xbox is set in auto mode for 4k. sound output for hdmi will only allow stereo compressed audio. bottom line.
    no matter what tv you test with. it will be the same result. please get this updated asap otherwise the $400 that we the consumers spent on upgrading our xbox is pretty much pointless.
