Updating to New Credit Card details

To answer the questions you posted:

1. To change the existing method of payment, simply head over to
   commerce.microsoft.com, sign in, select "Payment options" at the top, then add a new payment option. Once you've added the new payment option, you can set it as your primary payment option.
   
2. Your Gold Membership should be tied to your primary payment option. So if you change the primary payment option, you should be good to go.
   
3. By this, do you mean will your Gold Membership be automatically set to renew on the new payment option? I believe I'm understanding the question, but I want to be sure. At any rate, your Membership's auto-renew should reflect the option you previously selected
   for that. So if you would like to change the auto-renew option that you currently have in place, you can do that as well while you're updating the payment instrument.

Have you recently been issued with a new debit/credit card? I only ask because I had this a few days ago when I had been issued with a new card. If you have been issued a new card your paypal account will need updating with the new card details.

That's actually pretty normal for a lot of services, Welsh. When you have a subscription attached to a credit card, and that credit card expires, the subscription payments will still be honored by the bank or credit card company, but they won't allow further
purchases or new subscriptions to be set up until the credit card details are updated. This is a courtesy many businesses offer so you don't have to worry about frantically calling up everyone you do business with to update them all. It means you can update
various companies one at a time, as you need them.

It's actually pretty common for banks and credit card companies to accept payments from outdated cards, as long as the subscription was established prior to the card expiring or becoming otherwise invalid. This is called "grandfathering". When Xbox detected
that your credit card was going to expire soon, they sent you emails, asking you to update your details on the off chance that it does cause a service interruption.

If you did not get those emails, or chose not to update your credit card details, this does not indicate to Xbox in any way that you do not want to continue your membership, so they submitted the payment request to the bank using the same credit card information
you provided to them. Xbox was contractually obligated to submit this payment request to the bank, because you had indicated from the beginning that you wanted this renewing service until you notified them otherwise. And your bank, understanding that the
membership was a grandfathered subscription, honored the charge.

If Xbox had attempted to begin a new membership, or initiate a point of purchase sale using an outdated card, it would have been immediately declined, and you would have been notified of the failure to continue the purchase. Some parents use this feature
to their advantage, paying for a subscription on an expired credit card, secure in the knowledge that their child can't make any extra purchases without first updating the credit card details.
