Shouldnt have to buy an external device to do something that the console already should be doing. Isn't the whole idea of the preview program to test the updates?

I feel your pain OP would take me ages to install all my games again.

Agree the preview is to pick up on this type of thing

Disagree about the external device. Do you not back up your PC or laptop? To an external device?

I do. Mainly because I'm not going to lose my family photos and videos due to an OSX update fail or HDD malfunction.

^ i actually dont, i have all my family photos that i want to keep printed and videos get burned to dvd.

Guess im just stuck in the dark ages lol. I had a HDD that decided to delete everything on it so I am a little sceptical about using them now.

    Update wiped my hard drive

I just have way to many to burn to DVDs. I have my internal an external as my time machine and another drive with most photos on it that I sent to my parents house. Just incase mine burns down or someone breaks in and steals the computer and the back up
drive. I like a back up plan I guess.

xbox are aware of this problem they also have a fix ready now. if u have an external drive then u wont be affected as it only factory resets the console not the external hard drive.

  7. that sucks OP, it's one of the negatives of being a beta tester in the preview program. I'm glad they do this though so it gets caught in a test group and not released to the public. All my games are on an external, haven't played the past few days so i'll
see what happens when i fire it up tonight

I hope it doesn't happen to me. I'll just cancel the download if that's an option. I don't back stuff up either. The Xbox is supposed to do that. Why spend 500 plus another 80 For an external drive.

Besides all my photos are saved to the cloud. I bought an external drive about 6 months ago and haven't used it yet. It's formatted to my PC so I can't use it for my xbox anyway. Also, if people can't afford an additional drive, then it's not an option for
them. It's only an option for people who can afford one.

  9. There was an option to not complete the update but it would have stayed offline. Yeah I agree we shouldn't have to pay extra for something the console should have no problems doing. I back all my things up but didn't this because I didn't think my console
would factory reset after an update. I think I've spend enough on Xbox considering I paid full price for it and now it's almost £150 cheaper, not to mention I've purchased numerous headset adapters because they've broken.

This just happened to me. So annoyed right now. I only recently downloaded everything after getting my Xbox fixed. Man it's going to be tedious to download everything again

  11. So after spending most of the day installing all my games again, I've just been forced another update and now I'm presented with a screen that says 'there was a problem with the update'. I'm starting to lose my patience.

  14. Sorry to hear about having to re-download everything. Personally, I didn't really have the budget for an external HDD myself... but I went ahead and just got an inexpensive little 1TB drive. It barely costs more than a game.

I keep seeing people say "I shouldn't have to" - "I paid $$$" and etc. when it comes to purchasing a separate backup drive. Truth is, your console isn't that much different than a computer. Even if I paid 2X that much for a PC, there's no way I'd not have
a backup drive of some kind.

It's true... you shouldn't have to... in a perfect world. We all know nobody lives there. As it is, you don't have to... but there is a default ending to the statement "I shouldn't have to" It goes something like; "as long as I realize there will be consequences
if there is an unforeseen failure and I have no choice but to accept them." It's unfortunate to say the least, but it is what it is.

I got yet another invite to join the preview program just yesterday. Don't know how many that makes (wish I'd stop getting them TBH). Declined yet again. This is a perfect example of why I don't want a beta OS to be running on my console.

  15. I unplugged my console and got it working again, but had to complete the update again. I accepted, very dubiously I might add, and it worked without deleting my hard drive so hopefully things will be ok from now. Thanks for your responses.
