update on USB not working

my xbox is getting that msg I need to update. click, yes, then I got the usual errors couldn't complete. so I now I try usb stick.

download latest, extract files on usb 2.0 stick in root, put in xbox, then restart. now xbox says not enough room on drive. yet xbox system returns I have 1.5GB free space on internal drive.

the internal drive doesn't seem to stay formatted either. I have to format it each time I reboot.

so, at first the update can't connect via internet although internet test returns all Is ok. then I try USB stick boot up and this isn't working. chatted with tech support and tried all the above, so anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

it is not connected with xbox live because i dont have wifi at the moment. but i downloaded the latest update manually from the xbox website (www.xbox.com/system-update-usb) and updated
via USB.

Sorry to hear it. If you are having issues with the internal 4GB flash drive that are preventing you from updating the console then you will need to either send it in for repair, replace it or get an official Xbox 360 hard drive to update the console.

 

the internal GB flash drive is the one that came with it. it is as official as Microsoft can make it. ;-)

1). why it won't stay formatted between reboots might be just one question.

2). why this xbox won't boot this latest update via any USB 2.0 stick (formatted either fat32 or ntfs) is another question.

3). why updates over the internet have always worked until recently and not now is another question.

a browse of forums shows the update over internet issue isn't narrowed to just me nor the usb issue (with xbox). though MS tech support hinted at, mind you and very slight hint, getting the latest xbox, "xbox one". not ready to that either.

 

Ok, you misunderstand me. The internal drive is simply a flash drive. It cannot be removed and can be susceptible to failure.

An official Xbox hard drive comes in either 250GB, 320GB or 500GB sizes and would install on the right side of the console near the rear.

Getting an official hard drive may solve the issue but, as I mentioned, the console may need to be repaired or replaced as well.

is there an option once xbox is running to choose to "update" versus a reboot or hard reset?

 

Not on the 360. As for the internal drive, after updates, etc. you are actually left with a less than what is stated which is why it's always recommended to get the other drive.
