Update force formating

you could take the harddrive out, it would force the system to select any other drive, this being your USB. It will make you download the system updates to the USB for the system to work properly though, so make sure you have at least a 4GB Flash drive.

Though I would recommend a 16GB Flash drive, formatted in FAT32 format.

Sorry for the delay in replying... bad weather in the midwest. I'm not sure if the update forces itself onto the flash memory (though I suspect that's why they put it in there in the first place). You could try formatting a USB stick to work as a storage
device, remove the HDD and try to update that way. It's possible your drive has failed.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Work put a hold on Xbox Repair. Tried both clearing the cache and formatting the HD. Neither fixed the problem and after the format the HD doesn't seem to want to hang onto the updates. Turning off the xbox or backing back out
into the dashboard forces me to re-download the updates. Almost afraid to shell out the dough for a new HD if that doesn't end up being the whole issue. Apparently I missed my warranty by almost a month or so, fantastic luck on my part lol.
