    Update error, internal HD unable to format, etc.


    went to update Thursday Dec. 4, update failed, received this status code:

    417F 0000 0080 0300 8007 0070

    Console is a year and a half old, 4GB internal memory with an external harddrive plugged in.

    a few weeks prior to the update error, the internal HD, after working fine for a year and a half, suddenly became unformatted and was unable to be formatted

    the external drive has nearly 5GB free space and has room enough for the update, right? Could the fact that my internal drive is seemingly corrupted cause the update to fail?

    Background:

    I'm unable to download the update either wireless or via usb on my 360 slim with 4 gb HD.

    My HD recently vanished, and I had to re format it.

    The error code I'm getting relates to lack of HD space, and speaking to a Xbox assistant they advised getting an internal HD.

    I have a 16 gb USB stick, formatted for Xbox plugged into the system.

    Question:

    Before buying a hard drive, does the USB stick offer the same function as a hard drive? I'm worried that buying a hard drive might not be the answer if my USB stick is performing the same function as an internal HD.

    console wipes memory after every restart and unable to update.

    Every time I start my xbox 4gb system the internal memory shows up as unformatted. I then format it and try to install the update, when it restarts the drive is blank again and the process starts over.

    When updating via download after formatting it gives me an error unable to update and restarts.

    I've tried updating via usb and it tells me that the drive does not have enough space. So I format it and it recognizes it and I try the update and it fails and restarts again which brings the internal memory back to an unformatted state again.

    Just to clarify, are you referring the internal flash memory (4GB), as "the internal HD"? If so, I'm sorry, but if your console's internal flash memory shows as "Unformatted", then it has become inaccessible for use.

    The only resolution is to send your console in for a repair. Here's how:

    That's unfortunate to hear. Could that be a reason for my console's failure to update this week? Shouldn't it be able to use the space on my external drive for the update?

    Tester, for formatting the console's internal HD, a more technical procedure is necessary.

    The offline website update process is only for repairing the already installed system.

    In this case, I advise you to take the console for some assistance, or seek tutorials for this technical formatting of the internal HD. It needs to be repartitioned correctly, with all your folders installed in the correct directories, it's a little tricky to do, Tester.
