    I recently purchased a xbox one s. I have it connected to my onkyo which handles 4k and that is connected to my vizio 4k tv. I have the option under video for 4k UHD. It plays the signal from my cable box in 4k, streaming and games in 4k. When I put in a
    standard blu ray (star trek) the TV blinks and goes down to 1080p. From the description "everything" is supposed to be up scaled. It makes my cable signal look fantastic I was hoping for the same bump with my blu rays. I have double checked all the settings
    and everything seems set up correctly. Thanks for any help.

    Standard Blu-ray not being up-converted

    When playing a UHD Blu-ray, I get 4K resolution. Netflix is in 4K. When I play a game or any other app, the output to my TV is still in 4K (so the Xbox is up-converting). However when I play a standard Blu-ray, the output resolution changes to 1080p.

    Hey, drwatson618! Sorry to see any confusion surrounding this, however some items that are not 4K rated will not display in 4K. This is why the console needs to be set to Auto in the settings; not everything supports 4K just yet, and the console wants to
    adjust for those items.

    If you have any issues with UHD Blu-ray not displaying in 4K, or other 4K issues, please do not hesitate to let us know! Thanks for understanding!

    "Ultra HD" Blu-Rays will play in 4K. Standard Blu-Rays will play in 1080p.

    The Xbox One S will only output to the highest resolution offered by the Blu-Ray disc it plays.

    I suppose this design choice was in mind because 4K/UHD-TVs already process and upscale a lower resolution image to "cleanly" use all of the 3840x2160 pixels, so it's not putting unnecessary load on the Xbox One S CPU.

    app. In the discription it says no where that it can't upscale but says it will upscale "everything".

    If my blu rays can not be up scaled, (if it makes a difference or not) then I was mislead by Microsoft.

    DVD playback quality is still atrocious.

    Don't think a lot on here understand the word up scaling. Nothing to do with Blu Ray what so ever.

    Hey guys!

    We have a couple different issues being described here in this thread.

    Regarding certain UDH Blu-rays not playing, please visit our current thread on that

    over here to keep the conversation going in one spot.

    As far as Blu-ray movies not being up-scaled to 4K, this is by design. All Blu-ray movies are intended to play natively at 1080p, while UHD movies will play natively at 4K. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

    Yes. HDMI output supports upconversion. DVD playback will be scaled up to whatever the HDMI output resolution is set to.



    Keep in mind that it's not possible to generate something from nothing. Upconversion can scale things up to HD resolution, but because the source is still a DVD it's not going to look as good as a Blu-ray.
