So, I'm getting the same issue where the hard drive won't format, even after multiple attempts with entering console serial number and trying to transfer content to the hard drive. It is an older model but that shouldn't make a difference. It even let me
install the system update and all that. What now

    :)

You should not get the USB Memory Unit pop-up for a HDD unless it's connected via a USB to HDD adapter (not the official transfer cable).

It sounds like your 360 HDD has failed. You could test it using an official transfer cable, see if it shows up as a HDD when attached that way. That may help rule out if it is the console or the HDD that has the problem.

Unformatted Hard Drive (But I Formatted It...)

So originally I had a problem with corrupt profiles and error codes (Status Code: 3CD6 0000 0080 0300 D000 0185 feed) and a few days ago I gave up and decided to format my hard drive, hoping it won't corrupt on further use.

After formatting the hard drive (entered seriel number and what not), under 'Storage' it said that the internal hard drive was 'Unformatted'. Confused I formatted the hard drive once again. Went back in and it was 'Unformatted'. After many restarts of the
console and spamming the 'Format' option, it decided it was magically formatted. I installed Halo Reach back on, played it for a few hours and called it a day.

Starting up the console this morning, it was incredibly slow (2 minute start up) and when it finally did my profile was missing! Upon further inspection, I found the hard drive was 'Unformatted'. I have no idea what happened!

Anyone have any ideas how or why this happened?
