Unauthorized Minor Purchases

My son (he is a minor) spent over $3,500 in XBOX with 277 single purchases in a few weeks. As soon as we realized, we contacted Microsoft for help. The rep we reached via chat was more than happy to help and refunded the transactions that were posted in the account which were 22. The rest were not appearing in the account because of a system update that affected account histories, per the information we received from another rep. Once they all appeared, we requested refunds for the rest and have been told they were denied because of yearly limit on refunds. That is not what the first rep said and we cannot find any limit anywhere. The first rep says Microsoft is understanding of these situations and refunds all unauthorized purchases made by a minor but now we are being denied because not all orders appeared when we first reached you because of a glitch in your own system. We are not trying to abuse the system, just recuperate money we cannot afford to lose. Can we please get someone to help us? Thank you!

According to the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA), if you didn’t approve the charges and didn’t add your kid as an authorized user, the charges are technically considered unauthorized and you’re only liable for up to $50 in unauthorized charges.

If a kid is making hundreds of purchases totaling thousands of dollars in a matter of weeks, there should be a way to flag as unusual activity and freeze the account until verified.

I am hoping we can find a resolution.

only support can help this is a public forum with no access to anything.

technically they are not unauthorised as you left the child with access to a payment method without restricting their access to said payment option via a passcode or changing their profile settings to restrict spending. if a child account was setup as it should be then things like this don't happen.

Unfortunately only the refund department can help you with this process. The only way you can contact them is by replying to the email that you received telling you that you are not eligible for the refund.
