Unable to use the XBox/Xbox 360/Minecraft apps

With the XBox Companion app and Minecraft for Windows 10 app, I'm running into an issue getting them to work with a Microsoft Account. For example, with the Minecraft for Windows 10 app, after I successfully sign in, I get the following error:

'More info' doesn't have any useful help. Here's what has been tried so far:

Try again -- repeats the same error immediately

Switch account and selecting the existing account shows the successful logon message ("Welcome Back!") and after clicking Let's Play, the above message comes back.

Removed the Microsoft Account from Settings -> Accounts, then re-added it. This lead to the same error message above once we've returned to the Minecraft app.

Just to be clear, this isn't a username/password issue. I can successfully sign in with the account to live.com as well as add it under Settings -> Accounts in Windows.

This is on Windows 10 1903.

This is on a child's account but I've removed the content restrictions. The PC used to be domain joined (now Azure AD joined with no policies) but the group policies have been removed.

Yes, it is up to date. No, this is not due to a network error. What else do you have to suggest that's helpful?

I think its wrong that the Xbox 360 smartglass won't run I used that programme before the Xbox one came out and now I unable to sign or login the the app. It seems strange that the smartglass app for 360 is still downloadable and get I can to login in or
connect to the 360.....

If you're unable to install the game using the installer downloaded from the official game website, please try installing it through the Xbox App on your PC:

Open the Xbox App, and in the search bar, type "Minecraft Launcher" to see if it allows you to install it that way.

If you can't find it manually, you can use the following link to make the Xbox App open specifically in the Minecraft Launcher page so that you can install it:
