Unable to update xbox 360. Hard drive stopped during update

Cranked up my xbox 360 after about 6 months. All went normal. Then it said I needed to update the console, so I said yes. It downloaded the update and started to update and then it stopped and thru up an e68 error code with this long number after it; 4451-4467-2380-0f00-c000-0034.
Found out the hard drive has probably died. Bought a new one. Stuck it in, but it keeps looking for the old hard drive with the update on it. Tried using a usb stick and a cd but neither worked, just keeps looking for the old hard drive.

How can I get the console to update so I can use it?

Unfortunately that error means a storage device was not found during the update process. From our

System Update Troubleshooting page:

A storage device (memory unit or hard drive) was not found during the software update. Follow these steps:

Turn off your console.

Remove all console storage devices, including any USB flash drives, external hard drives, or the internal hard drive on the Xbox 360 S console. Learn how to remove the hard drive.

Add your primary storage device, for example, the hard drive.

Turn on the console

Try updating the console again.

It could be that the hard drive is failing. The Xbox is unable to read the drive, thinks that it needs an update but the update will fail because the drive itself is failing. Your 360 might be dead basically.
