Unable to sign into Microsoft via Gmail account

I have a Gmail account I used to create an Xbox account a while back. I purchased a subscription on a game I wish to cancel, and the directions to cancel in game told me to go to Microsoft.com, sign in to my account, and then go to manage account, and all of that jazz. Unfortunately, despite 2 password resets, when I attempt to sign into my account, I get a mostly blank webpage with the message:

"Please retry with a different device, use a VPN, or other authentication method to sign in. For more details, please see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2317517".

Like I said before, I changed my Microsoft password multiple times, as I do have access to the Gmail account through Gmail. Is there some way to remedy this? I'm not even able to find a relevant support page for my issue at this point, and I just want to not be charged $12 a month perpetually for something I only intended to use for a month.

This is a known issue many users are facing. A workaround is after entering your account email address and before entering the passwords, select "Other ways to sign in" and use another form of authentication

You can't really merge two Microsoft Accounts.

If you haven't invested money in the Gmail-Microsoft Account, you could simply back up all your data (i.e. OneDrive, Skype contacts etc.), and delete your Gmail-Micorosoft Account.

After you have deleted that Microsoft Account, add the Gmail address as a sign in Alias to your existing Hotmail Account.

After adding the Gmail Address as a sign in alias, make this the primary sign in email, and restore your OneDrive files to that OneDrive, and add the Skype contacts to that account.

Thanks for your post. If you are using a 3rd party email as your Microsoft account alias and you delete the Microsoft account it is on, you will not lose your email. Since Google manages Gmail, Microsoft is unable to close your Gmail account.

If you received a confirmation email on your gmail account when you redeemed the code, then that's the correct Microsoft account (the one that uses your gmail to sign in).

If a Microsoft Account has an alias from a outside email provider (e.g. Gmail), and you remove that alias, it won't close the outside account that hosts that email address.

For example, my Microsoft Account has an @gmail.com currently configured as an alias. If I remove that alias, I'll still be able to access my Gmail via Gmail, using my Google Account while I continue to access my @outlook.com addresses via Outlook.com using my Microsoft Account.

Mind you, this is just general advice. If your mum has been using her Microsoft Account and Outlook.com to sync all her mail from Gmail she may not be familiar with Gmail's interfaces (and may not even have all the mail in her Gmail inbox anymore if it was sync'd to Outlook.com and deleted). You should also make sure your mum doesn't use the Microsoft Account to access any other services.
