  1. Unable to prevent an unknown device from accessing my account.

    Good afternoon,

There has been some unusual account activity on my microsoft account and I am hoping someone can lend me some support.

There is a login on my account that I do not recognize, playing games using my xbox game pass. What is unusual about this is that changing my password, repeatedly denying access, removing the device from my devices, and setting up the authenticator app have not kept this device from accessing my account.

This seems completely bizarre, especially since there hasn't been any damage caused by this incursion. It seems like a pretty sophisticated way just to get a free game pass. I have verified the device is not mine or any one in my family's device. The IP address doesn't match anyone I know and I removed all the devices that usually have access just to be sure. I then did not sign in at all all weekend, only to receive a notification today from my authenticator application that the same device had logged in and was playing games on my account.

I am pretty alarmed that a method exists to totally bypass the "two step verification" authenticator app used my microsoft.

I attempted contacting microsoft support, but they were less then helpful. Their suggestions included:

    -Warranty my xbox one

    -Clear my browser history

-Opt out of email notifications (that alert me to permissions granted)

-Disregard the one drive storage bug (not even remotely relevant)

I'm basically gonna be forced to close my account at this rate, and this is my last effort at securing the account. Any help would be appreciated.

    :)

    Thank you for your response.

My sincerest apologies, I realized there is no "Update Security Information." on account.microsoft.com

In order to proceed with updating your security information under "Security" > go to "Advanced security options" > then click on "Add a new way to sign in or verify" to add new security information to secure your account > then remove your old security information.

After removing your old security information, your 30 days security lockdown will begin.

For more information regarding security information you can check it here at this link:

    Thanks for your reply Darhyl,

I have inspected the options presented carefuly, and there is no apparent option for "Update Security information"

after going to "account.microsoft.com" and opening the "security" tab, the following options are available:

    -security dashboard

    -change password

    -see your sign in activity

    -additional security options

    -stay secure with windows

    -learn more about digital security

the "security dashboard" has the following options

    -sign-in activity

    -password security

    -advanced security options

    -stay secure with windows

"sign in activity" is the same regardless of the link you choose

"password security" simply takes you to the change your password page, which prompts you to change your password.

"advanced security options" takes you to the same page as "additional security options"

"learn more about digital security" and "stay secure with windows" are both self help articles, which offer no useful information whatsoever.

the "advanced security options" page lists the following options

    -change password

    -view password activity

    -view email activity

    -remove "email a code"

    -view text activity

    -remove "text a code"

    -view sign in notification activity

    -remove send sign in notifications

-add a new way to sign or verify

    -turn on passwordless account

    -turn off two step verification

    -learn more about removing password

-learn more about two step verification

    -learn more about app passwords

    -create a new app password

    -learn more about signing out

    -sign me out

    -generate a recovery code

Please let me know what I am missing, as none of these options are what you described in your response.

    Hey Rachel!

Nice to meet you! I'm Darhyl, an Independent Advisor. I'm sorry you are experiencing this. I am here to help.

This is a strange case indeed and it seems you have almost exhausted all the troubleshooting steps.

The only option now to secure your account is to have you change your account password first, then change your account security information on account.microsoft.com > Security > Update Security Information.

NOTE: It is important to have your account password changed first before changing your security information so that your account will be automatically signed out from the hacker's device and also he won't be able to change your account password again.

By updating your security information, your account will undergo to a 30 days security lockdown. During this time, you won't be able to make any changes to your account such as make purchases, change your account information or even sign in. Rest assured that after 30 days, you will have full control over your account and prevent anyone from accessing your account.

Why not enable the requirement of a password on your account to prevent others from using it?

That way they'd be unable to access your account to disable the block.
