Unable to play xbox original game

Hey all, hoping I could get some insight on this. Before you say it, I've done and checked everything in the sticky: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/xbox_360_support/f/8/t/25.aspx already.

I'm trying to play Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II. It is on the list of compatible games.

I have the disc.

I have a 360 elite with an OEM Microsoft 120GB HDD. I took the HDD out and it says microsoft on it, as well as under settings on the dashboard.

The 360 is connected to the internet via ethernet, I have downloaded all updates as well as deleted and reinstalled. I DO NOT have a paid XBOX live account yet. I'm just connected to the internet.

I am not getting any errors, and I play other games on this console just fine. I put the game in, the disc drives whirs a bit, then it's just not recognized. Top left of dashboard it just says "open disk drive." I gave the disc to a friend who has the
white 360 and the game worked fine for him.

Could this be happening because I do not have a paid xbox live account? Is there something I need to load manually via usb/disc because of that?

Can you confirm or deny whether it is an "Official Microsoft HDD"? A picture perhaps?

So I've been trying to play the original xbox game, fable. I have a Microsoft hard drive wit h 227 GB free. I have tried the suggestions found on the post by Mister Gwyther, to no avail. It is a game that I have downloaded from the marketplace, however I
have also tried putting in an original xbox game disc and that does not work either. I have the xbox 360 slim. Whenever I try playing the game, it tells me me "The game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again." I have tried downloading the game again
multiple times.

 

Not having a Gold membership should not matter unless the game is online only which is doubtful as Xbox Originals don't have online play anymore.

What I have to ask though is where you got your hard drive from? If it was purchased online then perhaps you got a 3rd party drive. 3rd party drives do not have the necessary firmware in order to run Xbox Original games.

Do you have any other Xbox Originals or are you able to plug your friends drive into your console to try it?

I can't say for certain where it came from. A friend passed away, and I helped take care of his things, which is how I came to be in possession of the 360 in the first place. Since it was the only HD I came across, and because of the Microsoft insignia
on the drive itself and under setup, I believe it must be an official drive that came with the console when he purchased it.

My friend has either a silver or gold account not sure which, and he said that when he put it in it instantly downloaded something (most likely the emulator profile).

There is no online gameplay for this game.

My friend now has both my HDD and the game which he will be giving a shot tonight, so hopefully I'll have the answer for myself tomorrow. If that doesn't pan out, I'll try his drive/game in my console. If it works at his house, then it would appear a paid
account is a necessity. If it works at mine, then I've probably got an HD issue. If neither work, well...

A paid account is not a necessity to play original games. Just an official drive. I'm leaning towards the drive being 3rd party which would be why it won't play. There are a lot of unscrupulous retailers online who have no problems with slapping an Xbox
Sticker on something even though it's not really official. It's one of the bad things about purchasing items from an online retailer.

 

Is there a surefire way to tell if the drive is Microsoft by looking at it?

 

Nope. The only way to tell is to try running an original game.

 

So as I mentioned, my friend tried my HDD and the game in his console last night. It immediately downloaded the emulation profile and he was able to play the game right away. I'll be trying it on my 360 after work and I expect it to be fine now that it
has the required download.

I'm really at a loss here...

I'm at home, CD in HD hooked up, signed into my friends gold account, and the game is still not recognized. It just doesn't make sense.... I can see the saved game that he played on the HD! Why...

 

Despite the fact that it reads other disks, maybe the lite-on optical drive is to blame. Maybe trying another disk drive is in order...I can't think of anything else.

 

So, the game occasionally works now. With the console disconnected from the internet, one time of many that I tried putting the game in resulted in it actually playing. It would seem dumb luck was the fix here, but not really.
