  1. Unable to play with another Xbox in the same house.

    Me and my roommate are unable to play a game together when it is just us two. If we have someone else hosting, then it works just fine. And when we are playing separately, our internet is flawless.

    We both are trying to use Ethernet connections, one being plugged directly into the wall, the other into our router. It can work if one of us is connected to WiFi while the other is still on Ethernet. To make this easy I'll make a few scenarios to show you
    what works and what doesn't.

    Scenario 1 - Doesn't work

    Wall Ethernet ---> Xbox 1

    Wall Ethernet ---> Router ---> Ethernet cable ---> Xbox 2

    Scenario 2 - Doesn't Work

    Wall Ethernet ---> Xbox 1

    Wall Ethernet ---> Router ---> WiFi ---> Xbox 2

    Scenario 3 - Works

    Router ---> WiFi ---> Xbox 1

    Wall Ethernet ---> Router ---> Ethernet cable ---> Xbox 2

    While this seems like the solution, the WiFi at that range makes the connection terrible and the game unplayable.

    When we move the router into the other's room, the same scenarios occur.

    We talked to our ISP and they recommended two options. First, to try and use google DNS to fix it. I tried using that and a few other methods, and those didn't seem to work. The other option was to pay an extra fee to get a STATIC IP. But we'd prefer not
    to pay the extra fee if possible seeing as how the only issue is, we can't play together but still have internet connection.

    We're looking for any suggestions or solutions. We just can't figure out why this is even an issue in the first place.

    Thanks in Advance

    :)

    add another xbox live player in same house

    @ace386 you should be able to set up the Xbox Live account on the second console even though it is the same account that you've used on the first console. But yes, you cannot have two Gamertag using the same email address. You will need to create a different
    email address or Microsoft account for the second Xbox Live account.

    For the sign-in solution wizard, please follow this link:
    support.xbox.com/.../sign-in-solution

    You can also create a new account by following this link and select "I need a new Email account".

    If you still have problems signing up for a Xbox Live account on the second console, please contact our Phone or Chat support department for further assistance.

    I'd recommend checking on the NAT status in network settings on both consoles as you will want to ensure both consoles show an Open NAT and not Strict etc.

    Open NAT if you don't know is purely to ensure you both don't experience matchmaking issues/party chat problems etc. Also, it will be worth hard rebooting both consoles and doing a reboot of your router to ensure all caches are cleared on each device. Then
    boot one back up, check NAT, leave it switched on and boot the 2nd console and check the NAT.

    Easiest way to attempt getting open on both consoles is logon to the admin page for your router at home, take out any previous firewall rules you created specifically to get the 1st console in Open NAT (if you had to)/disable the DMZ (again if you were previously
    using this method for an Open NAT) and just enable UPnP on the router, if it supports it. That is the easiest method of getting both consoles working fine on the same network, however, some routers UPnP implementation is a bit naff and they still struggle
    to give both consoles Open NAT. At which point it might be best to look at the age or model of your current router and compare with newer models.

  5. Our NAT types are open and have been open. One of the Xbox's isn't even connected to the router so I don't see how that could be the issue?

  6. Sorry if I've misunderstood something but both consoles have to eventually reach a router. Even if its through the wall it has to go back to a router at some point to then make it out to the incoming line from your ISP.

  7. One of the consoles is connected directly into the wall Ethernet port. It gets internet and everything but it doesn't let us play together. Is there an alternative to spending more money on another router?

    Unable to play with another Xbox in the same house.

    The most interesting information that we'd need to know is, if the wall ethernet is a direct public connection to the internet (e.g. an University Dormitory, where each room has it's own public IP), or if you are living in an apartment complex, where the
    whole complex is connected to one public internet line, and the different apartments are getting a "private" IP address from the service provider at this apartment complex.

    In Scenario 3, what is the router being plugged into to get internet that it then distributes via WiFi? Is that a travel router where the router gets Internet from a cellphone based service (e.g. 3G/4G/LTE)?

    Since in the first two scenarios, both consoles are eventually connected to the wall ethernet in one way or another, they are both connecting to the same network that provides internet to the wall ethernet plugs. So it might be, that the ISP running the
    "wall-ethernet-internet" is not correctly
    Hairpinning
    .

    I assume in the Scenario 3, someone uses a router that is not connected to the wall internet, and gets the internet connection from a completely different internet connection (I'd assume cellphone based, or if there is a public WiFi
    at the apartment complex, it's a separate IP network from the "wall-internet").

    So if you could provide us more information about the infrastructure behind the wall ethernet connection, I might try to help a bit more.

  9. We live in an apartment complex. I'm not sure what type of IP is being assigned to each port.

    There are Ethernet ports on the walls in each bedroom, the router is plugged directly into one of those ports and is able to send out a WiFi signal. We then plugged one of the Xbox's into the routers Ethernet port, and the other into one of the Ethernet
    port that's plugged into the wall.

    The WiFi connection used in scenario 3 is coming from the router we set up in our apartment. (See above)

    I would like to note that if we plugged both consoles into the routers Ethernet ports rather than one into the wall and one into the router, it works just fine. But given the space we have, its not practical to run a 100 foot cable through our place just
    to play games together.

    Depending on how the electrical wiring is set up in the apartment complex, you might use home plugs like

    Devolo dLAN Powerline
    adapters (there are other companies that make similar adapters).
    That way, you can plug one powerline adapter into an electrical wall outlet, and connect a network cable to the router and the adapter. This will "inject" network signals into the house's power lines.

    Then in the other room, your roommate can then plug in another powerline adapter, and connect a network cable from the adapter to his console. And he should have the same connection as if you were running a 100 foot network cable through your homes.

    But before you go out and buy that stuff, it might be worth a try if you have a person in the complex working for that apartment complex's IT, and ask them to help you set up your consoles with only a connection to the ethernet wall ports. Your
    mileage may vary, but when I went to the campus IT back then when I was a student, I brought a bag of pastries to their lunchbreak and casually talked about the issue getting my Dreamcast running on the campus network.

    A few hours later, my issue was resolved, and my Dreamcast had a connection to the Internet.

    I mean, a University IT department is something else than the ISP providing internet for an apartment complex, and you might not even have a local technician there.

    But if you need to find more information about the console's IPs and stuff, you might do this:

    In the console's network settings, you should see the IP address from each of your both consoles.

    Then you both use the console's Microsoft Edge internet browser app, and go to What Is My IP? Shows your real IP - IPv4 - IPv6 - WhatIsMyIP.com®

    Check if the IP address differs from what is shown on your console, and most importantly, if the IP shown on that website is different for the both of you.
