  1. Unable to play games from discs

    Hi everyone,

For no discernible reason, my Xbox One has become unable to play games from discs. I have never experienced issues playing games before, but now, whenever I try to play a game for which I own the disc, a message pops up saying I need to insert the disc or
sign in to Xbox Live in case I bought it online. This only started happening immediately after a recent software update, which I installed after coming back from being out of town for a week. I played my Xbox with no issues whatsoever just before heading out
of town the week before. My Xbox was left completely untouched for that entire time, so I find mechanical failure a very unlikely explanation. I have already been through Microsoft support, who determined that my Xbox needed to be sent in for expensive repairs,
of which I am highly skeptical. My console is less than three years old.

The specific problem I have is that whenever I try to start a game that requires its disc to be inserted (namely Halo 5 or Halo MCC), a message pops up saying

"Do you own this game or app? If you have a game disc, insert it now. If you bought this online, make sure you're signed in to Xbox Live. If you don't have rights for playing it, you'll need to get it at the Microsoft Store. (0x803F8001)."

Rest assured that I am signed in to my Xbox Live account, I am connected to multiplayer, I do own the disc for the game in question, and it is in fact inserted in the disc drive. I am not doing anything that I have not done hundreds of times before.

When I came back from my trip and before contacting Microsoft support, a different message showed up saying that I needed to sign in to my Xbox Live account to play the game. However, it had exactly the same behavior -- I was unable to start the game. It
changed to the message above after I factory reset my console (without wiping the data on the hard drive) at the recommendation of Microsoft support.

Any ideas for what to do? Is anyone else experiencing this after the software update?

    Thanks for your time!

    :)

Personally, I have not experienced this kind of issue from the recent OS update.

I'm curious if you've already tried
resetting the console to factory defaults
while keeping your games and apps installed. If you've not already tried this. It couldn't hurt to give it a shot.

  6. Yes, I followed the procedures under "None of my discs play, or my disc isn’t recognized when I insert it." They did not help.

  7. Yes, I have already done that. As I mentioned briefly, it did change the error message I was getting, but it did not fix the problem.

Unable to play games from discs

    Hi there,

If you have tried all the steps this trouble shooting page:
    Troubleshoot Xbox One Disc Errors
and all fails you will either need to set up a fulfillmentor contact Xbox Support like mentioned on that troubleshooting
    page.

The best way to reach Live Support would be here:
    https://support.xbox.com/contact-us#0

It's going to ask if you want help from the virtual agent select
no thanks, pick the category(Games)and just pick a contact method
(request a call from support or Chat is faster).

Side Note: When registering a fulfillmentit will also show if the console is within warranty or not, when
within warranty the fulfillment/replacement will usually be covered by Microsoft.

  9. Hi Leslie,

Thank you for pointing me to those resources. However, I already contacted online support yesterday and have explored those options. My Xbox is no longer under warranty but is less than four* years old. I have never owned a console that broke this fast --
or broke at all, for that matter. Both my original Xbox and Xbox 360 are still in working order. Seeing as a fulfillment would cost half the price of a brand-new Xbox, and even more than simply re-purchasing all of my games through the online store (bypassing
the disc problem), I consider that solution unacceptable. Aside from the inability to read discs, my Xbox is working perfectly well. Is there no chance that the recent software update could be the cause of this problem? Would Microsoft be willing to give me
a new license for the games whose discs I already own?

    Thanks

*Edit: I originally said three years, but it is actually almost four years old (I got it at the end of 2014).

    Hey there,

Are you part of the preview/insider program? If so you may want to report this issue through the insider hub.

    1. On your console, install the
      Xbox Insider Hub
app (if you don’t already have it).
    2. Hold down the Xbox button on the controller.
    3. On the power menu, select Report a problem.
    4. Describe the problem in detail, including when it happened, if you saw any specific error codes or messages, and if you were using any specific games, software, hardware, or accessories when you encountered the problem.

Aside from that, since all available troubleshooting has been performed then the only option left would be the out of warranty repair. Unfortunately, Microsoft will not be able to add/replace licenses to your account for disc games.

    Hope this helps
