Unable to make latest update work, Aug 2014

Hey fellas,

I've been battling with my X-Box 360 E 250GB for the past few days.

My son stumbled on the latest update around 2 or 3 days ago. As a good user and well trained by a father in the computer industry, he immediately tried to apply it.

Lately, due to spotty weather, the ADSL has been dropping randomly. And I suspected the inability to complete the update was due to a dropped connection.

Our internet connection is now stable. The console is on wireless, has good strength and good quality of signal. Testing the connection to X-Box live reports positive on all steps. The only thing I'm unable to correctly assess is the 3rd step, which results
in the dialog to download the update and does not show the result of said step. I do not have a long enough Ethernet cable, or a long enough phone cable, to test it wired.

So last night I came round to the forums and began to search for a solution.

What I've tried so far:

• Clear the Cache 3 times then reboot and retry the update, not from after boot screen, but through the Test X-Box Live connection.
  
• Remove the hard drive, and/or any other USB mass storage, then re-insert and retry.
  • I did this with the power lead off. For a guy in the industry, it really doesn't make sense to only remove and insert a drive with no power lead. I'll have to retry with the console turned off but still attached to the power lead. But this scares me since
    it seams the motherboard is powered (the fan is on when it's "shut down") and I really don't like to mess about with swapping hardware on a live motherboard.
    
• Clear the last update with LB RB X LB RB X and retry.
• Download the update to an USB pen and try to install it.

All of this has FAILED. I'll elaborate a tad on the results. Who knows, it can help on a diagnose:

1. The first failed attempts, the progress bar goes up to about 15% then comes up with the status code dialog.
   
2. After clearing cache 3 times or clearing the last update (LB RB X thing) the update downloads a bit further, to about 60% and then the dialog comes up.
   
3. The USB pen method, also goes up to about 60% and then errors out.

Here are some of the status codes I've been getting:

• 4174-0000-3080-XXXX-XXXX-D000-0185
• 4174-0000-3000-XXXX-XXXX-D000-016B (This one worries me since the description is to get it repaired)
  
• 4174-0000-3080-XXXX-XXXX-8007-XXXX

I've exhausted all of the solutions that I've searched for in this forum. So what now?

You can try these steps to apply the update:

Copy the update to a USB flash drive or CD/DVD

Download your profile again

In some cases after an update, you might get the message "Connection to the Xbox Live has been lost” when you try to start a game or app, and you may be signed out of your account. To resolve this problem, try downloading your profile again:

From the Xbox Dashboard, go to social.

Select Sign In or Out.

Scroll right and select Download profile.

Sign out of your account (if you are signed in).

Select Download profile.

Enter your Microsoft account user name and password.

From my numbered list you can see that update on USB drive failed.

So, I can't really get passed that hurdle to try and go through any of the profile shenanigans

It's getting more and more obvious that my last attempt should go through a drive re-format. I just wanted to avoid this at all costs.
