Unable to join a friend's games on Xbox

I'm on a Series X console, and I have this one friend I really want to play with, but neither of us are able to join ANY games we try to play together. We'll either be able to join from our profiles or invites, but the game says "connection failed" or something similar, or we won't be able to join regardless, depends on the game. Keep in mind we are able to join parties with each other, and also join other friends we have and play with them, but whatever we do, neither of us can play with each other, it just doesn't seem to work at all. If someone could help as I've tried switching profiles to join, clearing the MAC address on our consoles, reinstalling games, restarting xbox's, restarting the router, but to no avail. We also don't want to factory reset, thanks!

Can you please check what is your NAT Type as well as your friend's NAT Type?

Would it be okay if you ask your friend to use a different account of him and you will use a different account?

You're correct, mmChrispy. Is your friend or do you have another account on your Xbox that you can try and use in joining this friend's game? Just to isolate the issue.

We've both factory reset our consoles, re-added each other, and then went to join his Terraria game but it doesn't work. It doesn't give me the option (the join from profile is grayed out), and even if I somehow get the invite, it just says "failed to join session". I think I've exhausted all of my options.

You may need to check on your Internet Service provider as there may be restrictions on their end. It can be a compatibility issue on both your internet service provider as well.
