Unable to format the device

You're not giving us any details whether you refer to the external hard drive, or the internal flash memory.

If you refer to the external hard drive, then, with your console powered off,
safely remove the hard drive and add it back.

If it concerns your internal flash memory, then I'm afraid that your only resolution is to send your console in for a repair.

On your Xbox, go to the "Settings" menu.

From the "Settings" menu, select "System".

From the "System" menu, select "Storage".

From the "Storage" menu, select the storage device that you want to format.

Once the storage device is selected, you should see an option to "Format" or "Initialize" the device.

Select the "Format" or "Initialize" option and follow the prompts to complete the process.

Keep in mind that formatting a storage device will erase all data on the device, so make sure that you have backed up any important files before proceeding. If you are unable to access the "Format" or "Initialize" option, it is possible that the storage device is not compatible with your Xbox or is not properly connected. In this case, you may need to try using a different storage device or consulting the Xbox support team for further assistance.

If it fails the test you are unable to format it to be used for 360 storage.



So while you can still use it with the 360 for the purpose of watching a movie or listening to some music, you will be unable to use it as a 360 memory device.



There is no way around that as far as I am aware.

ok first off all clearing the system cache isnt like formatting the hard drive what you type is correct after it performed maintenance it will return to that screen.What kind off usb drive u use may bee its to big ore isnt compatible

try these options owh and the xbox wil format the drive fore you it doesnt use fat32

Clearing your System Cache ONLY deletes the "hidden" background System and Title Updates that are downloaded when connected to Xbox LIVE. It's a relatively fast process but maybe you are actually having an issue with it not completing.

If your USB drive cannot be formatted, then perhaps it was or currently is NOT up to the performance standards required to be compatible on the Xbox 360.
