Unable to format new drive to use for games and apps

like it says above, i am unable to format my hard drive for use with games and apps.

Steps I have tried so far, with the help of Joseph B from xbox support(assume i mixed and matched EVERY combination of these steps):

• format to any and all file formats (RAW, NTFS, ExFAT, FAT32) and default settings as recommended by windows 8.1
  
• plug the device into any of the 3 ports available
• perform hard resets (hold down the power button till it dies, then restart) with both the HDD plugged in at boot and not.
  
• checked and unchecked the "When xbox is off, turn off storage"
• connected and d/c from xbox live (saw in an obscure forum somewhere, thought I'd try it)
  
• prayed to the god of IT, Lord Gates. for his support and help.

The results of these tests concluded that either nothing came up (device wasn't recognized?);

it showed up, but only as a media drive (tagline: Pictures, music & video), with the only option presented with the press of the 'A' being "view contents" and "close";

and lastly when formatting to the RAW format, with any of the other conditions satisfied, it presents with the "format" option, but when pressed the green loading circle (similar to the outline of the icon from the hard restart boot screen logo, but without
the inner green circle or X) appears and spins indefinitely (well 9+ hours and counting) until you force quit the settings app from the dashboard.

As i said above i spend about 1.5 hours testing most of this with Joseph B from xbox support live chat, but to no avail. His next recommendation was to come here and post and hopefully someone else has experienced this problem and can help me out

External Drive Problems

Did support have you re-format the drive? If so, everything on that drive has been wiped.

If you are unable to format it again for games and apps once you plug it back into the console then its dead.

External Drives sometimes fail.

Buy a new one and re-download all of your games to it. I recommend a Seagate. Hasn't failed me yet. 4+ years old.

When I connected my new Western Digital 1TB "my passport" harddrive (with USB 3.0) it wouldn't recognize it to format it as a games/apps drive, but only as a media drive.

After many attempts with cables, resetting etc.. I found a solution.

removing the app media-player from my Xbox and then it let me allow to format my drive as a games/apps drive.

I found many posts from people on the web struggling to have the harddrive as a games/apps drive but without succes.

So I just thought to post this here so Microsoft could get rid of this bug (in Mediaplayer?)

 

mine was unused for a while and when I hook it back up I had similar problems , didn't see it as a hard drive , I was using the wrong dang cable ...

 

hmm I don't think its the cable for me, seeing as this is the only device i have with this cable. but I might go buy a new cable for it and see how that goes. in the meantime, any other ideas?

 

Does the drive have more than one partition? If so the delete the partitions and set the drive up with one partition.

This drive gets its power from the USB bus and not its own power source. I have read that sometimes that causes issues.

 

I have never had problems with USB powered HDD, I took a look at the added features Noise Guard Eco Triangle and Eco Seeker, those could be the problem it needs to be NTFS and no other data other wise it will be seen as a data HDD.

 

yes it is only one partition, and only USB powered.

and yes i have wiped every shred of other data off the drive through the 50x ive formatted it.

As a friend mentioned, i also tried switching between GPT and MBR, but still no luck

please any other ideas? im also contacting seagate about this to see if its a problem with the drive.

 

A few things.....and lets all use this guide so we are speaking the same language -

1. On page 8.......does your USB cable look exactly like this one where it has the funny prong?

If your cable resembles page 7 then you will need to either buy a USB 3.0 cable or look in the box for it.

2. Make sure under your HD power settings and the xbox one power settings that you do not allow the console to turn on/off the HD

3. Make sure the usb 3.0 cable is snug and fit tight (Also consider the cable just may not be a good cable)

 

err sorry, #3 should read, consider the HD just may not be a compatible HD. There are some reports of cable issues when using Google for this HD and others being used on a computer that all seemed to resolve themselves without replacement over time with
no other changes.

for #2 the checkbox "When xbox is off, turn off storage" is unchecked, not sure what other options there are.

and yeah im aware of #3 but that would suck. and also im assuming that if its incompatible then it would show up as a media drive

 

Im having the same problem with a PNY 128GB flashdrive that was connected to my xbox one console during the big November windows 10 update! My flashdrive worked perfectly fine before the update i had some anime and movies on that drive but after the update
I cant access the drive anymore from media player its like its was "blacklisted" during the updated! The flashdrive works fine om my pc, xbox360, smart tv just not the Xbox one anymore and ive reformated it and everything called tech support and tried every
trick mentioned above but no dice he told me come here and look for a fix.

Also Ronin 7EVEN your flash drive is too small, it must be at least 256gig. at 128gig, its below the requirement.

-I think i'd go with this is one of the widely reported issues with NXOE, where the new OS doesn't or is unable to format some external HD's. My only observation with the HD you have is that its not compatible with Win 8.1 or Win 10

I use a Western Digital MyPassport Ultra and also have used a Seagate both that have listed compatabilies with win8.1 This is my only suggestion but it requires trying another external HD.
