Unable to format external hard drive

I have just purchased a WD Elements 3TB external hard drive after I was unable to download the latest map pack for BF4 due to my internal drive being full. I connected the drive straight from the box to the xbox one and went to the manage storage section
in the settings. The drive was showing as being unformatted. I selected the drive, pressed A on the controller and selected Format. Upon doing this the screen flickers and then continues as if I had done nothing, still showing unformatted. The drive is connected
to one of the rear USB sockets on the console. Thanks in advance for any help.

Which external hard drive to use with Xbox 360 ?

as per the other comments about the use of the external hard drive for the 360 I am in the update preview program which allows additional External hard drives to be used.I purchased the same Seagate 2tb external hard drive as per my xboxone but when I apply
the format on the xbox360 as per the instructions it replies with unable to format. Would like to know what external hard drives are compatible? I no the hard drive works as tried it on the xboxone after it would not format for the 360

Is the drive USB 3.0 compatible? If not that would be the reason that it is not working. The external drive must be USB 3.0.

 

Yes it is USB 3.0 compatible.

Compatibility notes from the box read:

Formatted NTFS for Windows 8 or higher, Windows 7 or Windows Vista.

Requires reformatting for Mac OS X.

 

Alright, can you try formatting the drive on your pc and then plug it in to the console to see if it will be recognized properly from there?

 

It's a pre-formatted drive for PC's. It is my understanding that the xbox one requires the drive to have its own formatting to stop people transferring files to PC's and tampering with them.

My system can obviously see that the drive is there and it also displays that 2.7tb of free space is available.

 

Correct. But the preformatting may be interfering with the console reading it. Format it on your pc and see if it helps.

 

Formatting the drive made no difference. Still get the same result we it's connected to the console

 

I took a quick look in the support section here... something I'd suggest you do, if you haven't already. It asks questions those of us here may not have thought of and gives basic troubleshooting.

1 such question; Did your X1 recognize the drive when you plugged it in? If so, it should have stepped you through the process of setting it up.

If it didn't recognize the drive, then another suggestion is doing a full system reboot (which should have been the first thing you tried anyway) and try again. Trying another USB port was also suggested.

 

After some help via the live chat support, I am now able to use the drive.

@A Blue Illusion, at first no, it didn't come up with the QuickStart when I plugged it in. However after unplugging the drive, doing a reset of the blu-ray cache and alternate MAC address, it recognised it when I plugged it in after the reboot.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Problem solved.

 

After some help via the live chat support I was able to sole the problem. It required the Blu-Ray cache to be cleared and then reset the alternate MAC address. After the reboot it was then showing the QuickStart setup for the drive when I connected it again.
