Unable to Download and Install Xbox One Drivers on Win 7

So in the end it took me like 2 - 3 Hours to finally get my new Xbox One Halo 5 Master Chief Edition Controller to work on my PC !!

As you can see above Im using Windows 7, based on Windows Support it was simple as Plug-n-Play so does most guides Online / YouTube

Now, I did ton load of stuffs to actually get it working, so for Future Reference I want to get things straight on exactly what I need to do in future to actually get my controller running again ( In case maybe I format my PC or something so I have to install
the Drivers again for it to work )

So what I did at first was plug it in, it detects the controller but it wasn't able to Download / Install the Drivers automatically. So I turn on Windows Update, still nothing.

Then I Google around, some claimed that I need to update both these Optional Windows Updates

1) Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11

2) User-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11

I did and still it won't work, Drivers wasn't able to download and install itself.

So I did more digging around, I finally found the Official Drivers for the Xbox One which previously we had to download and install manually.

Downloaded it, Installed it, restart PC, unplug and plug back in my controller again instantly gets detected up and running.

So thing is, do I actually even need to update those two Windows Update in the first place that I've mentioned above ??

So in future, I had to download and install the Xbox One Controller Drivers manually again to get it running ??

I thought Microsoft claimed that it will update / install automatically....

Hell even my Eightarc Qanba Q4 Arcade Fighstick was easier to install than this, same goes for any of my other Peripherals, this is the first time i had so much hassle to get a Peripherals running....

Any able to get Xbox One Elite Controller to work on Win 7/8/8.1?

Has anyone figured out a way to get the Xbox One Elite Controller working in Win 7/8/8.1? The new controller has a different HWID in windows, so the previous Xbox One Controller for WIndows drivers don't work and I have been unable to find any bets drivers
online or through Windows Update. I can use my original Xbox One controller with Win 7/8/8.1 just fine via a USB cable, but if I plug in the new Xbox One Elite controller I am greeted with the "device doesn't have a driver" message since the HWID is different
than the installed drivers and Windows Update doesn't find anything either.

Obviously it works fine on my XB1, but I also wanted to use it for the number of PC games I have that provide control pad support. If I do the same swap of the Xbox One to Xbox One Elite via USB on my Win10 laptop I get a similar initial message, but Windows
Update is quickly able to find and install the Win10 Xbox One Elite drivers. Supposedly from the specs this is supported in Win 7/8/8.1 (*excluding the Xbox Accessories config app that is XB1/Win10 only), but even the MS support rep I chatted with online
was unable to find anything for Win 7/8/8.1.

At this point I don't see any performance or aesthetic reason to update my main i7-4970k GTX 980Ti machine to Win10, until I am eventually forced to do so for a DX12 game I actually want to play. I understand that the Xbox Accessories app isn't supported
below Win10 except that I can still use that clunky app on my XB1 to configure the two profiles stored on the controller, but even that workaround isn't helpful if Win 7/8/8.1 don't find the drivers to support basic functionality.

Try installing the drivers for the XBox controller in "windows 7 compatibility mode"

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

a) Download the controller drivers from the above link.

b) Right-click on the driver and click on ‘properties’.

c) Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 7 operating system from the drop down.

d) Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.

 

I assume you are connecting your controller wired to a Windows 7 PC, correct?

 

Yes Im, let me simplify things down.

1) Plug in to PC, doesn't automatically download Drivers.

2) Manually download and install two Optional Windows Update

4) Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11

5) User-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11

6) Tried reconnecting the controller again, still no go, Windows Update unable to find the Drivers online

7) Google around found the Drivers for the Xbox One Controller, download and installed it manually.

8) Problem solved.

In future will I still need to install these both Optional Windows Update ?

So again in future, do I have to manually install and download the Xbox One drivers like before ?? I was lucky to even find them online, what if I could no longer find it anymore in future. Of course I can back it up though, but by not having this Driver
ready to download directly from Microsoft, what If even my Backup is lost, then Im basically screw.....since it won't download and install automatically !

 

You shouldn't have to install, this could just be a backend configuration issue. Are you on a non English-US locale?

No Im from SEA, Malaysia.

Also I can guarantee you my Windows is Genuine.

I've even tried disabling my Anti-Virus, no god. Firewall is Window's Firewall.

I don't believe there is anything you have done wrong. There is the possibility of a server configuration issue for your locale. We will investigate and fix.

To answer your other question, you should not need to "force install" the drivers for this, windows update should be able to do it if the server is configured properly. If for some reason you continue to hit this in the future, all windows update drivers
are available on the catalog website. For instance these drivers are available here:

catalog.update.microsoft.com/.../Search.aspx. Please open this site using IE. Make sure to click on the description and choose the link that matches
your machine chipset (i.e. x86 for 32 bit, amd64 for 64 bit), click add and follow instructions.

 

I never knew that the Windows Update servers are based on which country your from and download from your local servers. I've always thought it's directly from Microsoft in USA.

I guess this make sense that sometimes certain updates won't even start download and I had to try few times or sometimes the download is very slow even though I have a quite decent ISP.

Though I knew that the Auto Update / Install for the Xbox One controller feature is very recent, for at first we had to download the Drivers manually for the controller.

I hope in future I will not face this same problem again. Tks for the help.
