Unable to consitently turn on Xbox One X remotely

My Xbox One X is rarely able to turn on remotely - via the Xbox App or Smartglass. I have the Xbox hardwired to my router, and "Instant On" is enabled. I have tried a multitude of things - new Ethernet cables, different router, different
Win10 computers (some wired, some wireless), system wiped the Xbox and started fresh, etc.

I've also noticed that games and updates don't always auto-download like they're supposed to. Sometime it won't initiate until I have turned on the Xbox. I have it set to download these while in standby.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated... I'm starting to think that there might be something defective with my Xbox One X.

Windows 10 Xbox App not turning on / finding my Xbox One X

Even though Instant On is enabled on the Xbox One X and that the console is on the same network as my Alienware Windows 10 Laptop, the Xbox App is unable to turn on my Xbox One X. If I go to where the Xbox One X is and turn it on that way as normal, it will
stream to the laptop.

The Xbox app is up to date.

Can anyone help.

 

Unable to turn on xbox remotely ever since NXOE

I was in the preview program, and once I moved to the NXOE, I was unable to power on the xbox remotely, using either the xbox app in windows 10, or smart glass. I upgraded to the elite console, and wasn't in the preview program any longer, but the NXOE was
out already, and the problem is the same. I can stream fine if the console is already on, but I can't turn it on remotely.

I've checked numerous times, and all of the options are correct as far as allowing smart glass and game streaming. I did some troubleshooting, and if I use the "turn on" feature from smart glass or the xbox app right after I turn the console off, it will
work, but if it's been sitting idle for a while, it will not work.

I mainly use the remote play feature over the internet, so this is pretty annoying. In the meantime, a workaround I have is to set the console to not sleep until 6 hours of inactivity, and just turn it on each morning before I leave, but I forget sometimes,
and I am just out of luck in this case.

There was a forum post about this issue a while back where other people were reporting it, but nothing ever seemed to have come of it, and I can't find the original post.

 

I'd give this a bump. I can never get my Xbox One X to turn on from the Windows app. If I start the Xbox and then use the app it connects fine. Game updates seem to be hit or miss. I've also been having issues getting media player to see my NAS. It's almost
like my Xbox lives in it's own little world on my network but with wonky automatic systems. I wager it's some kind of router settings but I've ensured UPNP is enabled, tried renaming the xbox as recommended elsewhere to no avail. Kind of stuck.

To clarify, when your Xbox One X console is powered off, are you seeing the ability to connect to your Xbox One X console? We tested this on our end while the console was set to Instant-On power mode, and there is no option to connect to the console while it
is powered off and the SmartGlass app does not retain the connection to the console while the console is not powered on.

For NAS specific issues, we'd recommend creating a new Support thread as that may lead down a different path of troubleshooting steps.

 

The Xbox App will show the console, but only if I've already manually connected to it when I have the Xbox turned on. If I turn if off via the Xbox App, I am not able to turn in back on, even if I just turned it off. SmartGlass is similar in that if I have
connected to the Xbox while it was already turned on it will remember it, but it is not able to turn the device on if it is already off.

It's my understanding that I should be able to turn my Xbox on remotely with either the Xbox App or SmartGlass, but it has never consistently worked since I've owned the device, which is very disappointing. Not sure why the option is even there if it doesn't
work.

 

Gotcha. We tested this again and were indeed able to power on the Xbox One console we tested using Instant-On power mode with the Xbox SmartGlass app and on the same network between mobile phone and console.

Let's have you try connecting your mobile device to this same network as your Xbox One console, power off the console, and then close the app and re-open it, do you see the ability to power on your console under the "Console" settings page of the Xbox SmartGlass
app?

If you're still experiencing trouble with this, can you please send us your Detailed Network Stats (Settings>Network>Network Settings>Detailed Network Statistics) as seen on your Xbox One console? Also, what is your NAT type showing as on that network?

 

I tried the SmartGlass app on my phone, while connected to the same network, and I still have the same issue. The app can see the Xbox if I already have it turned on, but once I turn it off with the app, it is unable to turn it back on.

Detailed Network Statistics are as follows:

Download Speed - 333.71 Mbps

Latency - 61 ms

Upload speed - 21.66 Mbps

Packet Loss - 0%

MTU - 1480

NAT Type: Open

 

Thanks for trying that as well as sending that info. Your network stats do not indicate any issues on that end. We read over your previous comments and were unsure if you were able to try a separate network for both the Xbox app and your console to see if this
same behavior persists. Is that something you'd be able to try? If so, can you please let us know the results?

Additionally, have you contacted
chat or phone support regarding this issue previously? If so, what did they tell you and what did they have you try?

 

I tried my Xbox on a separate network, and had the same results - I am able to connect to the Xbox if I manually turn it on. But once it is turned off, neither the SmartGlass or Xbox App are able to turn it back on.

I did talk with online chat support, and the things they recommended I had already tried, except testing a second Xbox, which I do not posses.

Things I've done:

- different Ethernet cables

- used wifi instead of hardwired

- factory reset Xbox and started fresh

- different router

- different Windows 10 PC's with the Xbox App

- Xbox on different network

 

Thanks for the update on this. Also, does the current router you're using have two different active channels between 5GHz and 2.5GHz? Is your Xbox One X console connected to a wall outlet or power strip?

 

My router does broadcast both the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands. When I tried wireless I connected it to the 5Ghz band. I have tried both plugging directly to the wall, and to a power strip/surge protector.

 

Thanks for that info. To check, both your console and your mobile were connected to the same 5GHz band when you tried this? Also, do you have any kind of MAC filtering or AP isolation enabled on your router?

 

Yes - both my mobile and Xbox One X were connected to the 5Ghz band at the same time. I do not have any sort of MAC filtering or IP isolation setup on my router. Thanks.

 

Thanks for that update as well. By any chance are you able to try this at a friend or family member's place with their network and Xbox One console to see if you're able to power it on remotely? If you're able to, it would indicate that the issue is indeed
occurring within your network. If that's the case, based on the steps you've already tried, you may want to reach out to your Internet Service Provider for further clarification and possible steps to try regarding this.
