Thanks for coming to the forums. We recommend first trying to reboot your network hardware. If that doesn't work try removing each other as friend then adding each other back as friend. Try these and let us know.

Please test everything listed in the article including NAT type connectivity and privacy/multiplayer settings. There are a few things to unload here before we can attempt to help you. Are you trying to play through a server on Minecraft Realms with your friend or are you trying to play regular multiplayer? Are you able to play other games with your friend online? Is your friend receiving an error code when they attempt to join the game?
