“Unable to connect” for Minecraft PE

I’ve tried both Realms, a regular random world map, and a downloaded map and none of which are allowing my friend and I to play. She has an iPad, and I have an iPhone both logged into our Xbox accounts/microsoft accounts and each time either one of us tried joining the other it says “Unable to connect” we're also both on the same wifi. Also, both of ours are updated.

I have seen this when one player is on a beta version of Minecraft and the other isn't.

If one of you is on a PC, is the PC version of Minecraft moded?
