Unable to change gamertag for free

I have never changed my gamertag but since trying, the system is demanding payment. Im not sure I understand, I have spoken with online support and been told to post a thread here. I dont know why. Someone pls explain?

You are entitled to a free change if the gamertag you are using is one of the generated/suggested gamertags that they make for you.

If you made your own gamertag, then unfortunately you are unable to change it for free.

Smwutches is correct. Normally, if you create the profile directly on the console. You are already given the ability to chose your desired gamertag. But if you created the profile online. You will be given a random generated gamertag. That's when you can
change the gamertag to your desired one for free. After that, you will be charged for the next change.

 

You are allowed to change your name for free once and it has to be within the first 30 days of creation. After 30 days you will need to pay.

Can you confirm if you are posting on the affected account that requires payment?

 

Since this account has a custom name alrwady you dont get ione free name changee on this account

Back in the day you was given the option to choose your own, rather than br given a random one, with the choice to change it. Which unfortunately doesn't apply to your account because you set it when the option to choose your own was available without obtaining
a random generated one. You will have to pay the fee if you wish to change it, I apologise for the frustration caused. I will mark this as the answer because there is nothing more that can be added to this unless you are referring to another account of yours
(if you have one) aside to this one in regards to the issue you are facing.

I had the same problem and thanks to your answers I know now that I will also have to pay. I think I will keep my old Gamertag.
