Two Xboxes different accounts how to join a game with each other

Hi I hope someone can please help I'm useless lol. My son has an xbox downstairs and my youngest has borrowed his xbox from his dad's but he wants to join to play a game with my other son. Can this be done with both having different accounts I can't find any help I'm going round in circles lol x

Yes, this can be done with different accounts.

But both accounts needs to meet this criteria:

1. Have an active Xbox Live Gold (Or Game Pass Ultimate) subscription <required to play online)

2. Are friends

If only one account has the Live Gold subscription, you can do this if you want to share the Live gold.

Add the account that owns Live Gold / Ultimate in the console that doesn't have it.

Then, sign in with that account. Go to Settings > General > Personalization > Home Xbox and check that option.

Now, you (or the person) needs to sign in the other account and both can play together the game (if the game supports the option)

Your sons would just need to add each other as friends, then - as long as the game they want to play supports online multiplayer or co-op - they can invite each other and play together.

If the game isn't free to play, they would need to have Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions in order to play online.

BTW, the friends system on Xbox is currently broken and MS are working on fixing it, so they may not be able to do this right now. You can check the service status page here to see if the issue is still ongoing: -

The two Xbox One games were Black ops 4 and Gears of war 4. Another xbox 360 game I tried was Gears of war 3. The system link option was availiable but the two consoles couldnt find each other so we couldnt join each others game.

Are you saying you purchased the game twice on one account? Or did you buy two copies of the game on separate accounts?

If it's the second option, have you tried logging into each launcher with different Microsoft accounts?

In the upper left corner, you can log out and log in with the Microsoft account that purchased the game and do that on the other launcher as well.
